Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.

what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.

Started out ok but seriously? Too much Blair Witch Project BS.

As found footage films go, this begins with one of the most persuasive scene settings I've seen for some time. Whilst testing his camera equipment, Jake (Josh Stewart, who also wrote and directed) is enjoying a laugh with his tiny children, who in turn are screaming with delight at the images on the camera. They don't know they're part of a horror film, they're just having fun; as an audience member, I'm instantly thinking that surely such an appealing family unit isn't going to be wrecked by anything 'orrible. With little further build-up, Jake and Stevie (Ronnie Gene Blevins), are deep in the forests of West Virginia. They meet the quietly threatening Tony (Skipp Sudduth) who lives in the forest, and his daughter Jessie (Jessi Blue Gormezano). As the two friends hunting monsters, not a huge amount happens. This is a slow burner, despite wasting no time in setting up the premise. But if you're happy with that - and I am - this is worth your time. The acting is very naturalistic. You really believe these two are good friends. So when their footage appears to be tampered with, and the Blair-Witchy-woodlands behave strangely, it is effective. Most potent, however, is the child-like screaming of whatever is 'out there'.Whilst the ending is disappointing, I enjoyed this for the most part. It is strange to once more glance at reviews and see the marks given for 'Dark Forest' 10 out of 10 and plenty of praise, or 1 out of 10 for the obligatory 'worst film I have ever seen' nonsense. The truth as I see it, is about halfway between the two.

I watched this movie yesterday, alone at night, and it was incredible! It's been a long time since I have watched such a great "found footage-movie".The main characters are the best choice for this movie, because they are really good actors, and one of them looks and sounds like Rick from The Walking Dead ;) (Just a plus)The tension build-up is perfect, with the screams and the silent old-school orchestra music. If you enjoyed The Blairwitch Project, you're going to enjoy this movie even more!It is very rare for me to give a movie a 10 in vote, but this one deserves it. Here comes some spoilers:As it might have concerned many of you; no you never get to see the actual ghost or monster (don't wanna spoil which one it is), but that doesn't matter. Don't get me wrong, usually I dislike most of the horror movies where you never get to see the ghost/monster/killer, but not this one. Actually, for this movie, it is a plus that you don't get to see it, because the "sounds" are enough. But I don't wanna explain more about this, it will just ruin it for you.Pros:LocationActingActorslightAtmosphere ...Cons:THERE ARE NON!You should really go watch it! You will not be disappointed!

Josh Stewart needs to be blacklisted from ever taking part in the film making process again! This is not a profession he belongs in. Criminal charges should be brought against him. The producers should be blacklisted. This was so very bad! Why didn't someone stop him? A primary schoolchild would have done better. He started of well and there was so much potential for a good ending. Really, my life is so much poorer from having viewed this and I now have to remove these minutes from my memory banks. Hopefully there is some home Electro Convulsive machine available or a process to scrub my memory. Why would this probably nice man, make such a movie and why would anyone fund it?
