This actioner is set in a remote, heavily forested area in Northern California where marijuana growers raise their illegal crops and run whole communities with their terrorist tactics and wealth. The tale centers on the efforts of a fearless New York cop to free one such community from the tyranny of the pot growers. It begins with a surveyor who is leading the town's crooked sheriff to a small marijuana field he has just discovered. The surveyor is killed before he can get there. Joshua, a small boy, sees the execution and tries to get back in time to tell his parents. Unfortunately, the killers murder his family and throw him off a cliff. The boy's aunt, worried at not hearing from her family, gets suspicious and asks an old flame, NY cop Joe Dillon, to investigate. The town sheriff is not pleased by his intrusion and warns him to stay out of it. Dillon disobeys, and that is where all the action comes in.

The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.

OK, for those of you who love 80's movies, this is the movie for you. Sure it is ridiculous, but that is the point. This movie has a hilariously awesome plot, an awesome opening scene, its extremely explosive when it needs to be, and its from the 80's. If that description doesn't do it for ya, I don't know what will. If you haven't seen this movie, you really need to. Even if you think you will hate it, this movie needs to be seen by all. This movie is right up there with C.H.U.D., so if you want a laugh or some inspiration, watch this movie. Personally, it is one of my top 20 favorite 80's movies, mainly because of the action in it.

The first time I saw this was back in high school. I rented it(I'm sure it opened in a movie theater somewhere) and watched it with some friends. We had a blast, and it became one of our go to movies when it was time to rent something. No one would ever object to it because they had never seen or heard of it before. And everyone enjoyed it (even the girls, bonus!). But that was a while ago, then to my total amazement it was on IFC. I was nervous that it would not hold up, but it did to my relief. Who ever came up with the idea of an inner city cop and a semi-feral boy teaming up to take on a drug cartel in a pseudo western set in Santa's village is a F##king genius. OK, the music did not hold up but man is it funny. There is one song that crosses the line from funny into embarrassing. I would not be surprised if its a Joey Travolta tune. Or maybe even a Joey Travolta cover tune! So if you have a thing for 80's action or 80's hair or just want to see something a bit different then its definitely worth a rent.

I wanted to see this film for years, so I was glad when it was finally released on DVD. James Remar, who plays the lead role of NY cop Joe Dylanne, and Nick Cassavetes, who plays main villain Valence, are two of my favourite actors and they both give excellent performances in this film.Remar is great as the big city cop who is called in by his ex-girlfriend to find out what happened to her brother and his family in the forest countryside of California. Remar specialises in playing tough guys and Joe Dylanne is no exception. He is charismatic and very enjoyable in the role. Cassavetes gives a performance not too far away from his character of Packard Walsh in THE WRAITH, another of my favourite movies. Valence is a total psycho and a sadist to boot. Just see how he punishes one of his dope farmer associates for getting stoned at one point. In supporting roles, Daphne Ashbrook, Adam Coleman Howard and Jared Martin are all excellent, although when he first appears in the movie, Howard sounds a bit of a sour note. Anyway, the action sequences are all handled excellently and the film is, in my opinion, a great show. I have the Region 1 release, so I hope it gets a Region 2 release.

I do not understand the previous comments. What is everyone smoking??!! This movie was horrible, and I will mention a couple of things that made this movie the traffic accident it is.The score on this thing is atrocious! There was bad music when they should have kept quiet, and there was no music where even the bad music would have been welcomed. And that bar scene??!! Do I even have to comment??!!I give this a thumbs down and I'll even throw in a vomit bag. Watch at your own risk aaaaand be sure to remember, this was the 80's.
