Absolutely Brilliant!
It's a western. Men shooting other men for silly reasons.
Had all the drama of the old TV westerns. If Hollywood or any of the Independents ever did a movie of the old Gunsmoke series like they've done with other TV series, I would say that Bill Pullman would make a great "Festus". That's what his Lefty Brown character reminded me of. I'm surprised I hadn't heard of this movie in the theaters.
Lefty Brown is that kid on the playground that no one picks to be on their ball team, but who ends up saving the game. He's hesitant, clumsy, and not very bright. He makes a lot of noise trying to sneak up on anyone, failing miserably at any kind of stealth. But he's kind, doggedly determined, and the one you want on your team after all.Bill Pullman's Lefty is a wonderful contrast to Jim Caviezel's steely-eyed Governor Bierce, who is cold, calculating, and cruel. Tommy Flanagan and Kathy Baker also carry the film in wonderful style.I love Westerns in general but cringe through many of them because of ridiculous cosmetic unreality. In "The Ballad of Lefty Brown," everyone wears shades of, well, drab. And that's realistic for 1889; regular folks didn't have the money for fancy, brightly-colored clothing, and even if somehow they did, they certainly didn't wear it as everyday or work clothes. With few exceptions, the characters are dirty and dusty. Their hair is a mess. The men need a shave. And it all works.
Excellent western Film new comer Diego Joseph great alongside Bill Pullman. I love westerns and I really enjoyed this film. Great cast. Thank you.
