This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.

I saw this on HBO for the first time in 1981 or 1982. It was Summertime and it was the perfect late night movie to watch. I loved it then and I love this now. Even today I prefer to watch this very very late because it ups the creep factor. In this film a group of 4 friends are on a day trip. Before they arrive we see a man and his son killed by "Some Flying Object" that sticks to you and precedes to kill you in some fashion. These flying disc are from an Alien that is out to kill. This film stands out because it does have future academy award winners Martin Landau and Jack Palance. Great Movie and fun to watch! What amazes me was that this film was never available on home video. The 1980 film was finally released in 2014! It took 34 years! If you like old fashion style stories then get this. The film is well made and its lots of fun.

While I can't say 1980's "Without Warning" was the best Sci-Fi/alien flick I've ever seen, I can say that it did exceed my expectations. The plot of the film is simple: Using bizarre looking but deadly living blood suckers as weapons, an alien creature from who knows where is ruthlessly stalking human prey alongside a rural lake for the sheer fun of it. After we witness a number of poor blokes being done in by the safari minded visitor, a group of teenagers decide it would be a great idea to go up to the lake and have some fun despite the warning they receive from slightly crazed, gas station owner and obvious hunting enthusiast Joe Taylor (Jack Palance with his usual fire and zeal). You can probably guess how things turn out from there! After their two friends are killed, the survivors of the group, Sandy (Tarah Nutter) and Greg (Christopher S. Nelson), run to the nearest town where through a series of events, they end up being caught up in Joe Taylor's quest to bring the creature down. But it's not just the creature they have to worry about, as Joe Taylor's paranoid friend Fred 'Sarge' Dobbs is also on hunt; the only problem is he thinks everyone is an alien! Will our heroes succeed or are they to be outsmarted by the professional hunting fiend from space? If the story sounds somewhat familiar to you, it should since Hollywood would use a very similar plot for the 1987 classic "Predator". But while the overall stories might sound familiar, they are by no means the same film. "Without Warning" uses a very different design for its creature from the stars, one that somewhat resembles the classic gray alien but still has its own uniqueness about it (Curiously ,though, the man who plays the creature here, Kevin Peter Hall, would also go on to play the monster in "Predator"). But the thing that really makes the creature stand out is its horrible blood suckers that it throws at unsuspecting people. Looking a bit silly while flying through the air, once they attach themselves to a person they instantly become one of the most cringe worthy things ever put to screen due just how realistic they look, even after all these years. I don't know who did the special effects for this film but who ever they were, they earned their keep. The film is also creepy at certain points due to the smart direction of director Greydon Clark. As for the actors, all do a very good job here, particularly Jack Palance as the slightly mentally off-balanced but still rational Taylor and Martin Landau as the completely off the wall Sarge. Christopher S. Nelson and Tarah Nutter also should be congratulated for holding their own as the young and confused teenage victims. Add in a very effective music score and you have a decent, fun B-movie from the days when Hollywood knew how to make them. To be sure the film is not Oscar-worthy but then again, if I wanted to see something that was I would simply watch "Gone With the Wind" instead. The movie is not available on DVD yet (It's set to be released for the first time on DVD in August of 2014) but it is on you tube. If you're a lover of B-movies like me and have some time to kill, "Without Warning" is sure to entertain you. Also starring Ralph Meeker, Cameron Mitchell, Larry Storch, and a very young David Caruso.

This movie had good actors in it. Martin Landau and Jack Palance, who were stars when they were younger and would go on to do better things when they were older. This was their "Working for Booze Money" phase, and it wasn't pretty, as they were both overacting in roles that were kind of silly. Also here- David Caruso before NYPD Blue and CSI Miami. The plot is that apparently an alien has taken to hunting people in a rural area. And Landau and Palance's characters are aware of this, trying to find a way to kill the monster. Meanwhile, a van full of horny teenagers shows up to be Monster bait. But the monsters are barely in the film.Oh, hey, Larry Storch from F-Troop is here. No one is entirely sure why. I think he was the comic relief, but it isn't funny when there's gore and a threat to children is implied. He and Caruso and others are victimized by the alien weapon, which is a flying disk with nasty tentacles. It's actually kind of a cool effect. Too bad it wasn't in a better movie. The flaw of this movie is that the characters do things that make not a lick of sense. Landau and Palance are introduced and then forgotten about for about half the movie. THe whole thing looks like it was shot in some rural town for the cost of box-tops.The alien is kind of creepy in that they follow the monster movie rule of not introducing your monster in full view until the last moment possible. Before that it's an ambivalent threat. It's like the film makers really did some things right but did a lot more very wrong.

The cornball sci-fi flick "Without Warning" is widely seen as a semi-inspiration for the more famous "Predator", which also stars Kevin Peter Hall as an alien that goes around killing humans. What I notice is that the stars of this movie, Jack Palance and Martin Landau, both eventually went on to win Best Supporting Actor, much like how "Predator" stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jesse Ventura later became governors.Anyway, the movie is about what you'd expect. The copy that I watched even had Greek subtitles (it was probably either a copy of a copy or taped off the TV). It turns out that makeup artist Greg Cannom also did the makeup for "Mrs. Doubtfire" and "Titanic", while director Greydon Clark pretty much directed B movies throughout his whole career. This movie makes no pretense about what kind of movie it is. It's pretty enjoyable.
