Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals (1977) * 1/2 (out of 4)Reporter Emanuelle (Laura Gemser) is undercover in a hospital when a female patient eats the breast of one of the nurses. This leads Emanuelle to discover a cannibal cult in the Amazon so she heads down with her lover and various others and before you know it they're lost in the jungle trying not to be eaten.Director Joe D'Amato and star Gemser made a handful of films together including several in the Emanuelle series, which was obviously meant to cash in on a certain series. I must admit that I really don't find any of them to be all that good, although each of them at least has some sort of sleaze that makes them memorable to a certain level. With that said, EMANUELLE AND THE LAST CANNIBALS is a notorious film due to some violence but in all honesty it's not that good. The Black Emanuelle series was a rip-off as is but this film also tried to cash-in on the success of various cannibal movies that were quite popular during this period. Those films were certainly controversial in their own right but this thing here just comes across as a rip-off and nothing more. There's certainly nothing erotic about this picture and it doesn't matter how beautiful Gemser is. The cannibal stuff has some gory violence but it's really not all that special and even worse is that there's no fun adventure with all the jungle stuff.I've seen around one hundred D'Amato films and I admit that I think he was a much better cinematographer than director. This film here has a slow pace at times and it just isn't very entertaining. Gemser is certainly easy on the eyes and she owns this role but the end results are weak to say the least. Exploitation fans will still want to check it out but there are much better films out there.

Oh gosh! This movie was really hard to watch! It's completely boring and unbelievably stupid too. The acting is incredibly poor, so are the dialogs. The plot.., well, it's quite typical for all of the cannibal movies, but the persons in this story are so dumb and their behavior is so illogic that it makes you pray that this whole parody would end as fast as it can. What's more, it isn't even too gory - there are only few short scenes, but they don't make any impression. Even the beauty of Laura Gemser doesn't help - this is probably the worst cannibal movie I've ever seen. No, sorry, the worst is "Cannibals" by Jess Franco, so this must take the 2nd place.

The undisputed King of Sleaze, Joe D'amato teams up yet again with Laura Gemser for another entry in the Emanuelle series, this time journalist Emanuelle is in the Amazon researching a story on cannibals. While doing some undercover work in a mental hospital, Emanuelle witnesses a female patient cannibalize a nurse's breast. Later on while masturbating that same patient, Emanuelle discovers she has a strange tattoo on her stomach, so she takes a photo of it with her camera-disguised-as-a-doll. She soon hooks up with anthropologist Mark Lester (Euro trash regular Gabriele Tinti) who tells her that it's a symbol of a long extinct cannibal tribe. He then takes her back to his house and shows her some cannibal snuff films before banging her. The two decide to lead an expedition into the Amazon to see if the tribe still exists. When in the Amazon they meet up with a few other folks – one being a nun who eventually gets one of her breasts eaten and then disemboweled and has her intestines munched on too – and then the rest of the films runtime is basically filled with the cast getting killed off by the cannibals one by one. This film pre-dates the other classicks of the Italian cannibal sub-genre by a few years, but although its one of the first, it's not one of the best. It follows the usual formula but drags a bit in places and is kinda dull overall - it definitely comes nowhere close to the raw savagery of Cannibal Holocaust. Although there are a few stand-out gore scenes: the cannibal snuff footage near the start, the evisceration of the nun and a scene where the cannibals cut open a women's vagina and pull her entrails out through it. Plus of course being an Emanuelle / D'amato film, there's a lotta sex. 6/10Oh, and there's also a smoking monkey!

Anyone who knows anything about Italian cinema in the seventies will immediately know what to expect from this film, and despite a few bizarre surprises; Joe D'Amato pretty much delivers exactly that. I'm not a massive fan of the Italian 'Black Emanuelle' series; but this edition is a really good sex and horror show, and I wouldn't be surprised to find that it's the best of the bunch. The beautiful Laura Gemser takes her most memorable role as Emanuelle once again, in a tale that works from a rather silly plot line. The plot is clearly an excuse for D'Amato to make a movie with both Emanuelle and cannibals in it, and it follows journalist Emanuelle, who is working undercover in a mental hospital for some reason. While there, she witnesses a nurse have one of her breasts bit off, and soon after finds herself in the jungle on the trail of the girl's cannibal tribe; reputedly 'the last cannibals'. This doesn't make an ounce of sense when you think about it, but what it does do is allow the film to follow a 'jungle adventure' premise, and really Emanuelle and The Last Cannibals is just another dirty cannibal flick. The plotting sees Emanuelle, her boyfriend and a motley crew of other characters picked up along the way making their way into the jungle. This plot is padded out with all the common sex scenes, and putting this Emanuelle film ahead of the pack are some nasty, cannibal-style, blood and guts! Naturally, there are people eating intestines, castration, knives being inserted where knives shouldn't be inserted etc. The jungle setting provides a nice location change from the largely urban orgy that was Emanuelle in America, and D'Amato makes good of this setting with some nice scenes; some of which are grisly and gory, while others are hilarious. Like the bizarre monkey smoking scene. The acting is rather suspect, and this isn't helped by the atrocious dubbing. Laura Gemser looks really silly with the voice they've given her; but her naked body is always on hand to make you forget. The music goes a long way to ensuring that this is a complete European exploitation experience, as it's sexy in odd sort of way. The sex scenes aren't particularly erotic, but what they lack in quality is made up for in quantity. Overall, this film is well worth an hour and a half of any Euroshock fan's time!
