Sneakers (2011)

I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.

This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

tells a story about a few young people, some with broken hearts, some with broken dreams, all facing hopeless grim reality of the corrupted society they live in.taking refuge at a beautiful deserted beach, were they can feel free, far away from problems that their country has been struggling with for the past 20 years, but the same problems pop up their ugly face even in this forgotten piece of paradise unlike many modern Bulgarian productions acting is pretty good, not deadly stiff.the location, one of the very few on the Bulgarian sea coast, left without massive ugly concrete buildings (at the moment of filming), is beautiful, and let me assure you - life there really is very easy going, much like depicted in the movie.so - a great effort, congrats to the team

but this is its virtue. old things, a lot of clichés, young people in search of life sense, a beach, fight against law, rules and society, confessions, friendship, bitter melancholia and joy of small things. slices of freedom. and end like part of modern fairy tale. nothing original. but the state of prison in yourself is without limits. and, in crisis hours, this kind of film, with dust of Balkan way to resist against existence troubles, with delicate harsh poetry, with the expressions of a generation frustration, the sea, the dialogs, the joy to be only yourself is really cure. a film about nothing. and, in fact, about all. a drawing. and tool for a trip in his experiences for its public.

Six youngsters decide to leave the bleak and dreary city in order to spend the summer together at the seaside, seeking freedom, believing they will find it there. It sounds like the perfect story, one that will fascinate you and probably will leave (even a subtle)trace in the history of Bulgarian cinema. Partly due to all the media attention surrounding it, and yes, this is the Bulgarian submission for the Oscars, so expectations were pretty high. Unfortunately, in my opinion, "Sneakers" could not live up to them. No remarkable lines, no scenes that will be remembered but what's worse - no goal. Six youngsters, and they were heading nowhere. Why? Disappointed by the mundane reality? There did not seem to be any major obstacle between them and any possible life goals. Proud to be nobody? Proud to ask "what is your dream", "what is your idea" while not pursuing any ambition at all? Therefore, we end up with no likable characters and a rather empty movie where the most important spoiler would be that pretty much nothing happens until the last 15 minutes. My advice? If you want to catch a glimpse of the contemporary Bulgarian cinema, you'd better choose another movie.
