Too much of everything
It's a movie as timely as it is provocative and amazingly, for much of its running time, it is weirdly funny.
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
I like Anjelah Johnson, she is cute and smart and her routines are clean. She doesn't rely on the shock value of R-language references and I like that about her. She doesn't just take a bunch of unrelated subjects, instead she gradually lets one subject lead into another, it is almost like one hour-long story. This film she starts with a short comedy sketch where she is in a car in Hawaii, running late and not knowing how to get to the theater where her performance is scheduled. She has a humorous interaction with a local giving directions that were not helpful at all. This is a good diversion, comfortably funny all the way through. I loved her explanation why she doesn't think she looks good in high heeled shoes. Her bowed legs.
