Mon père, Francis le Belge (2010)
Francis Vanverberghe, aka "Francis le Belge", was shot to death in September 2000 in a bar on the Champs Elysées. An old relic of the French Connection, his death sealed the faith of the french organized crime. He was a pimp, a drug smuggler and a multifaceted man risking his life and those of others every day, until the last day. Through his daugther's eyes, this film reveals the man behind the myth. To me, this movie is perfection.
I'll tell you why so serious
Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
Since several years now, we can see in France a gangsters biopics "fashion". Watch for Mesrine, Spaggiari, Le Gang des Postiches, and next year watch out for LES LYONNAIS, directed by Olivier Marschall, starring Gérard Lanvin. This TV movie tells the story of a notorious king of the underworld during the 70's, 80's and 90's who was shot in 2000: Francis Vanderberghe, aka Francis Le Belge. The unusual thing to say about it, is that is told by his own daughter, with her own eyes, emotion and feelings. Not the way we often see the hoodlums. it's fairly acted, the characters are believable, even not very known. An effective programmer.
