This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.

Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

This is the screen adaptation of Ntozake Shange's 1975 play "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf". This title alone is heavy with imagery and poetry enough to anticipate what follows it. The film is more marketably titled "For Colored Girls" - which takes from it any arching, celestial beauty or hollowing pain."For Colored Girls" was adapted, directed, and produced by Tyler Perry. It's surprising that a man would be chosen for such an acclaimed and iconic piece of African American literature and black feminism. Initially Shange had qualms about Perry taking on the film: "I worried about his characterizations of women as plastic", referring to Perry comic works with his Madea character. Later she said Perry had done a fine job, but that the film wasn't quite "finished"."For Colored Girls (Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf)" is just that. It's not meant for everyone; it is an open and heartfelt letter, and you will know if it's for you. "For Colored Girls" shows the scars and salves, the bruises and bonds that can tear a woman down and then bring her back up again. This movie is not easy to watch, and it's not meant to be; life isn't easy, it doesn't pull punches, but neither is it completely without hope. This movie deals with abuse, infidelity, rape, abandonment, love, sisterhood, strength, and beauty. The colors of this movie are infinite. Each of the main characters has her own bow of the rainbow. The artistic palate full with some outstanding dramatic performances, dancing, opera, poetry, and heart. This movie is for the colored girls who have felt joy and despair, who have seen both sides of the moon. It was made for you, and I hope you get the chance to see it.Aloha

I truly appreciate this film and congratulate the well rounded cast - men, women, small parts, large parts - well done. There are a few flaws in the film, which I don't want to get into as it could influence some of you who have not seen the film.....these flaws have to do with the script not staying on the edge enough - meaning I was able to guess where the script/action was going and that is something I don't like doing - I want the script to always always always surprise me. With that said, I can forgive the screenwriter a bit, but not totally.Janet Jackson was for me the surprise of the film - I thought she was truly wonderful in her role and did a fine job. She was one of the few 'non actors' in the film and held her own with everyone else in the ensemble cast. I had expectations from others in the cast, having seen their work in other films and they all did well and appreciate their performances. The only other 'big' disappointment in the film was the role played by Whoopi Goldberg - I'm a big fan of her work however something was a miss with her role and I don't blame her. Again I think it has to do with the script.I am not a Tyler Perry fan - I think he does a lot of negative images and impressions of African Americans and he loves stereo-types. Besides Precious, most of his films are very flawed, even racist. This film perhaps would never have manifested if it wasn't for the influence and power and money Mr Perry has. I don't think he should have directed the film and written the script. I think he should have worked more in collaboration with someone or someones and that would have helped the film tremendously. His ego got in the way too many times....however again, that is part of the 'flawed' aspect of a film, which generally speaking I appreciate and enjoy. I rated it 9 because of the ensemble cast - they did a great great great great job.

This is a movie made from the play, period. As a result the script was great and the acting extremely well done. The cast is superior. The plot so true to life and addresses many of the issues facing black women. The emotions of the women portrayed in this film were real and so well done. I was emotionally carried throughout the picture and I felt as if I knew the characters at the end of the film. This was a unique effort amongst all the other films coming out of Hollywood these days. Congratulations to the casting director! A very skillful and accurate selection of talent. There are several of the actors that deserve some sort of award recognition for their performance. The only negative that brought my score down was the fact that it doesn't flow like a film. It flows like a play. I would recommend this film as a must see for any member of the IMDb community.

The emotions are not the only ups and downs in this newest Tyler Perry film. I have a great respect for what Tyler Perry has done. His films, however simple, send out positive messages and have incorporated music and humor like we don't often see any more. This film, unlike his others, is adapted from a platy. A great one at that (so I've heard).I'll be quick. The acting is beyond perfect. Why was Janet Jackson not nominated for an academy award? Her performance was flawless. Kimberly Elise is always amazing and she does not disappoint. Let's just say there was not ONE bad piece of acting in this film. Them men were great as well. Kimberly's husband is eerily intimidating. Amazing work.OK...Here's why the movie didn't get a 10 from me. The characters randomly vomit out poetry from the original play. However beautiful, it takes you out of the film. There is so much tragedy in the film... the poems could have been voice overs or in a diary... but not spoken aloud. That's the films biggest downfall.Overall, this is a movie that needs to be seen. These are real problems that are faced by real men and women. Great job Tyler Perry. Can't wait until your next film!
