I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.

Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.

i haven't seen a more captivating movie ever...easily the best movie i ever watchedeach frame of this movie would remain with u for your entire life. i considered Casablanca as my favorite movie, but now escape from sobibor has taken its place.it was touching, heart wrenching, exciting, thrilling at the same time. it made me cry, made me think, imagine, made me angry, frustrated and jump with joy (in some sequences) . the acing was top-notch, screenplay taut, the story mind blowing, more so because it was based on true story and the execution brilliant. there never was a dull moment in spite of being a lengthy movie. do yourself a favor, watch this movie (that is, if u have not watched it already!) irrespective of the genre of movies u like! u wont regret it, rather be too happy to watch this....very very highly recommended......

I agree with what the first commenter added. I saw this movie when it first came out and till this day I remember the movie. It really disturbs me what humans have done things as such to other humans all because of different beliefs and customs. I also found the scene where the people were taking their bowls of soup and what was discovered as being in it. That is just horrible. I really can't figure how the officers could have followed the commands of their superiors to enforce the acts that were and go to sleep at night knowing the crimes they committed. I would have rather been executed myself rather than execute others. I couldn't have lived with the knowing of what I did in other words. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone that needs to understand the depth and meaning of holocaust.

I saw this one ironically a short while after I'd seen Schindler's List. I would have to agree with a lot of people on the comments and threads that this was better than Schindler's List. The best thing about this one is that the Jews fought back. Not only did they fight back but they freaked out the Nazis so much that they leveled the entire camp. I thought that was just the perfect icing on the cake. It's kind of comforting in a small way to know that the good guys can win when they fight back.*****Spoiler Time***** The part where they show the incinerators and the scene where the woman and baby are murdered are particularly difficult to watch. I can't help but feel like my guts have been torn apart when I see a child die in a movie. When it happened at the hands of the Nazi's it just seems to make it worse. There has been more than one friend, family friend and acquaintance that has seen this in school. I think that's a must see! Rutger Hauer was particularly good in this. You really get attached to his character and that shows a side of the war that's not as commonly mentioned. The Russian-Jews really perished a great deal at the hands of the Nazi's.Rent this one or buy it if you can find it!

I first watched this movie several years ago cuz it had Rutger Hauer in it, and I had liked his performance in Blade Runner. I had also taken a liking to Schindler's List, and I was aiming to explore similar movies dealing with the WW2 death camps (and there's only a handful of them out there). There are some scenes that could have used some polishing up, or seem to have been prepared too hastily. I am under the impression that not enough time was given to developing the Nazi camp staff; we know that they're evil, but a bit more attention to their personalities and specific roles in the camp wouldn't have hurt. I would have like to have seen more focus on Sasha's (Hauer's character) fellow captive soldiers and their involvement in the escape preparation.Escape from Sobibor certainly "shows" itself as a 1980s made-for-TV production, in terms of filming techniques and a lower-budget kind of feel. Nevertheless, the interaction between Hauer and Alan Arkin (the civilian leader of the escape) is solid, and the supporting characters (especially the guy who looks a lot like Fred Ward) come across as very likable. The death camp looks eerily authentic and resembles images I have seen in history books and documentaries. The concerns of life and death voiced by the Jews truly hits home, and the final 15 minutes of the escape are emotionally striking. The narration which describes the fates of some of the key survivors of the ordeal perfectly brings the movie to a close.I give Escape from Sobibor a 7 because of its honest and poignant subject matter. If you haven't seen it, definitely give it a look.
