As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.

If you're looking for something really nasty, this is a good choice. It doesn't feel particularly dated; the intensity of the visuals and audio keep it pretty fresh (which is ironic, right? Cus it's about dead things? Right). The music is harsh and unsettling, while the visuals are graphic, gory and gross. The film lacks any substantial plot or narrative, but that's not the purpose of the film. The film is made to be disgusting, shocking, and jarring, which it succeeds at. If you want anything more than a sadomasochistic, chaotic horror, I would avoid. This is one of the very few films that I found hard to watch, at certain points - the special effects are, for the most part, solid enough to believe. There are some exceptions to this, but the majority of it works. It definitely makes for uncomfortable viewing - as a concept, it seems pretty off-putting, but on film it's worse. It's a great piece of shock cinema history. It's not thought provoking to any degree, but will almost definitely make you squirm while watching it, which is what shock cinema is for.

A lady, panties at her ankles taking a p!ss by a roadside. I smiled. In this topsy turvy world of ours its gratifying to see such an opening so beauteously brazen, when you sit down to a film and a stream of urine is practically the first thing you see, well you know for damn sure you ain't in Kansas any more. Of course Nekromantik isn't really a film about women pissing by roadsides (probably a niche area even by urine fetish standards), not much thematic content in that there pale fluid, but the gesture is still delightful. Then both lady and her companion get in an altercation with a road barrier, bringing the film to its point, Death. I got a little hard. Plot is simple, we follow Rob, who works for a corpse cleanup team and has a hot girlfriend with whom he shares a passionate fondness for the departed. And just when things are really looking bright, everything goes to pieces. For all this the film is never truly depressing and has little of the truly sickening, instead it thrives on visual flair, morbid hilarity (notably a hysterical game of innard catch) and quality leads. The key is that whilst Rob and Betty may be a wee bit twisted, the film never reacts in disgust, indeed they seem positive, an antidote to apathy in their death steeped world. Whilst others stumble into death (accidents!) or commodify it (stomach churning rabbit farm sequence) they take death for their lives, for their pleasure, they luxuriate in its beauty in manner presented without abhorrence. Happily both are captured in fine performances, Daktari Lorenz makes for an utterly compelling haunted and dirty lead, skeazy complexion, dank and drear demeanour flaring to activity when around his beloved dead and Beatrice M. equally great as Betty (sadly she doesn't have as much screen time since she's pretty fine in a stab as soon as kiss you kinda way). She provides a bit of contrast, animal sexuality with a hint of malice and a nice sort of energy, like Lorenz wholly convincing. Its actually somewhat surprising that the acting is on the money here as the real goods come from writer/director/cinematic ultra wizard Jorg Buttgereit's artists eye and sense of humour, backed up by superb scoring (also from Daktari Lorenz). There are great images throughout this one, blood dripping from a cats tail or shattered rear view mirror, gorgeous line of outstretched leg from bath of blood, even a gentle meadow, cinematographer Uwe Bohrer capturing beauty and yearning romance on perhaps unpromising film stock (Super 8?). Lots of quality set decoration as well, rather authentic with the various corpses around often pretty convincing. Some sweet gore into the bargain too. The score is equally impressive, tunes of love and charm, of uplift and delight during the sex scene, later passages of disturbing discord and a memorable patch of repetitive strings portending breakdown. For all that the film excels at its art (and there are scarce few efforts in any genre from the same time period that come close) it probably should be noted that this one really isn't for everyone. This isn't a film of much psychological subtlety or philosophical depth, seekers after intellectual rigour will not find too much here as thematically this is about as upfront as they come, more concerned with aesthetics than serious discourse. I also wouldn't recommend it to those who look for gloss or conspicuous professionalism, though a triumph it is still definitely an underground film. And finally there's the small question of taste, it is conceivable I suppose that the notion of sex with dead people may not be palatable to all. But I can hardly recommend it strongly enough to those hardy enough to take the journey, 'tis truly one of the master-works of cinematic sickness. 10/10 from me, an instant favourite.

There are certain movies out there that, for me, are just hard to sit through. They are disgusting and shocking, sure, but they are not at all entertaining. "NEKRomantik" was not one of them. I found it to be sick and disturbing, but somehow I still enjoyed it.The most disturbing part for me was the farmer killing the rabbit, which was I thought was unnecessary. It was obviously real. I know Bugs was probably killed for food, and I eat meat so who am I to judge, but I feel that showing that kind of stuff in a movie like this is kind of cheap. It didn't add anything to the overall show and shock. I find that in the jungle cannibal movies, that sort of National Geographic footage adds something to the savagery of the film. Here, I was just scratching my head. The body was nasty. I have to admit I felt a little nauseous in the first "love" scene with that thing. Yuck.As has been stated, the music is amazing. I'd say as good as anything Goblin ever did aside from "Suspiria." If I had to sum up this movie in a nutshell I'd say it is most like Joe D'Amato's "Buio Omega" but a heck of a lot more graphic. Still watchable though.9 out of 10, kids.

Well were the heck do I begin with this film, i seriously don't know. There were 2 minor things i didn't like about the film but the rest was a disturbing presence of romance, depression, brutality and weirdness of the mysterious beyond.I like how the film's tale is told so simply. All it is, is about a guy and his buddies who find a rotting, charred corpse in a lake. The guy takes it home and him and his wife/girlfriend make love to it. His partner starts taking more interest in the corpse than him and she decides to leave him and run off with a corpse. His insanity gets to him and he goes on a small killing spree and then he commits suicide in the most unnatural way.For a low-budget cult horror, I will say as the story goes it is pretty decent in my book. It's like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Cannibal Holocaust and other films fused together to make this.I don't like the killings of the rabbit & cat. i felt they were'nt needed and it especially made me cover my eyes since it was real. The day dreaming sequences were stupid and to me there wasn't any reason for it, otherwise everything is up to scratch. I find most of the film interesting. The kills are pretty sweet, the rotting corpse is really graphic and it looks great, the music is insanely intriguing and the characters are stupid in the funniest way. The film also has a really disturbing tone. The funniest scene is when a woman is reading to the corpse.I only advise this film to those who have a strong mind. It is also a good thing that you watch 10 or so horror films before this one because if you watch this first you might not want to watch any horror film again. So watch this film in your time wisely. 7.8/10
