A simple tale of a son's affection for his mother and doing anything to stop interference. A short but sweet film which manages to mix comedic timing, hilarious jokes but at the same time reach levels of emotional maturity. John meets his perfect match at a mutual friends party but before a life of happiness and romance can ensue he must battle her quirky and over protective son Cyrus. When you first get into this film you expect a run of the mill comedy, nothing that hasn't already been made, but Cyrus manages to bring out great performances by comedic superstars John C. Reilly and Jonah Hill. They both manage not only to showcase their acting ability but there potential for leading roles, their on screen chemistry and battle is much like the one of Reilly and Ferrell in Step Brothers. You can never fault Marisa Tomei, an academy award winning gem who deserves more spotlight and leading roles and her role Molly proves that. The Duplass' showcase their ability to tell a genuine heartfelt story, and don't rely to heavily and the comedy to make the film entertaining. They strike a perfect balance of drama and laughter and the film deserves all the acclaim it receives. An outstanding example of comedy, romance and drama done right.

This movie was hard for me to classify. With John C. Riley and Jonah Hill starring in it I wanted to automatically deem it a comedy. But after actually watching the movie it wasn't quite that. There was comedy in it, yes, but not nearly what I'd expect from those two. It could be loosely defined as a romantic comedy or a dramedy (I'm sure that's the word for drama/comedy, it has to be) or a romantic dramedy. Yes! Romantic dramedy. The story was nice but nothing fantastic. Jonah Hill plays Cyrus, a mama's boy who, at 20-something, still lives at home and requires childlike treatment. John C. Riley plays John, a divorcée who began dating Cyrus' mother, Molly, played by Marisa Tomei. It was an interesting love triangle where Molly tries to juggle her new found romance and her attention starved son.It was a cute movie with some funny moments although I like Riley and Hill in different roles.

The plot of CYRUS is straightforward: Joihn (John C. Reilly) falls in love with Molly (Marisa Tomei), but finds his amorous advances frustrated by Molly's son Cyrus (Jonah Hill), who cannot contemplate the idea of his mother seeing someone else and leaving him (Cyrus) alone. John and Cyrus end up fighting with one another, but the film ends by suggesting some kind of reconciliation between the three of them. What distinguishes Jay and Mark Duplass' film is its underlying sense of irony: just like Cyrus, John appears unable (or unwilling) to allow his nearest and dearest to live their own lives. John is perpetually conversing with his ex-wife Jamie (Catherine Keener), while remaining blissfully oblivious to the fact that Jamie is about to marry Tim (Matt Walsh). Like Cyrus, John cannot let go: the two protagonists are uncannily similar to one another. It is only at the end of the film that both of them come to recognize their kinship. The film is shot in quasi-documentary style, with the camera perpetually encircling the characters' faces, punctuated by occasional zooms. This gives CYRUS an intense quality: the directors will not allow us to focus on other aspects of the mise-en-scene. The characters matter. The script (also by the Duplass brothers) contains more than its fair share of ironies. Definitely worth watching.

The user reviews for this movie are tiresome in their complete blindness to the humour (albeit pathos) in this beautiful movie.Social embarrassment is with us all every day. Think about the subtle and brilliant writing of Ricky Gervais! Don't sqirm, just enjoy the humour in our ridiculous tradition of pretending something that's true is'nt really happening. The situation in this film is happening a million times a day in real life, and the Duplass brothers have captured it magnificently. Relax your uptight views and see this for what it is, a classic and brilliantly portrayed aspect of human life. Please stop whinging that this was;nt the COMEDY you were all expecting, IT WAS A COMEDY THAT APPEARS TO HAVE GONE OVER YOUR HEADS!
