You get what you expect with this film. You get love, and you get summer fun. The story is about two girls trying to escape their troubled family life and explore things together. Emily Blunt is always good, and I was pleased with Natalie Press' performance as well. Besides the fact this is a lesbian based relationship, you actually get a true romance to go along with it. I understand for some people, the idea of this love is offsetting but the film depicts it more as summer fun then a dissection of lesbian lovers.I have to say it's pretty predictable, and there isn't as much depth to it as I would have thought. But considering this is basically Emily Blunt's first starring role, I think it's worth the watch. Mona and Tamsin did play well off each other, much props to both the actresses for going beyond what a typical actor would do. I'm sure it takes guts to do this type of role, especially early on in their careers. The film isn't anything special, but it does give you 85 minutes of summer. And to me, it's always good to step away from life for a few hours and enjoy a different lifestyle than your own. I really like the movies that send you to a different part of the world and give you more insight into what life is like other places. I wasn't thrilled with the plot overall and the ending could have been handled better. But because of the great lead performances, and the nice feel of summer the film gives you, I think it is a worthy watch. Especially for film buffs, and big fans of Emily Blunt.+Emily Blunt shines +Summer fun -Not enough depth to the story 7.2/10

This movie really held my attention. I almost felt as if I was a part of it because of how emotionally involved it made me. The scenery was beautiful and the music bizarre and trippy. Tamsin was a very cultured character and her confidence (in the beginning) is very appealing. Later on though, you just start to wonder if she is hungry for attention because of insecurity. I give this a 9 and not a 10 because the ending where Mona tries to drown Tamsin was disappointing to me...but it did leave us all with a sense of confusion which I think makes the movie more interesting all in all. Definitely worth watching

My Summer of Love is a 2004 British film directed by Pawel Pawlikowski, who co-wrote the script with Michael Wynne and is based on Helen Cross' novel of the same name.Set in West Yorkshire it deals with themes of love, confusion, belonging and the pernicious affects of lust and enigma. The picture opens by introducing Mona, a forlorn girl who lives with her older brother in a converted pub. Disenchanted by her brothers conversion to Christianity, a development that transpired during his incarceration, she lives day to day with little purpose or aim until a chance meeting with Tamsin. Elegant, capricious and mysterious, Tamsin enters Mona's life like some kind of epiphany. Quickly the pair bond and this fascinating dichotomy of a working class girl and a upper class boarding school rich kid begins to play out. Mona, engrossed by her new friend, is introduced to a world that she has hitherto been unaware of. Tamsin, perhaps due to boredom or whimsy, is equally as charmed and the pair embark on a summer of mischief that includes drinking, smoking, psychodelics and vandalism aided by the use of a garden gnome.Delicate, dark and beautifully shot, this film tackles it's subject with grace and skill. The director sourced his films leads from an eight month search of Schools, Universities, and theater groups and found two massive talents in Natalie Press - Mona, and Emily Blunt - Tamsin. The role of Mona's brother is played by Paddy Considine, whom Pawlikowski knew from an earlier collaboration. All three of the aforementioned actors give incredible performances. Press and Blunts on screen chemistry is amazing and completely believable and the always excellent Considine gives the role a patented eeriness that simmers below the surface at all times. The script is great and the story arc is gripping, managing all at once be tender and wistful and also arcane and tragic. An all round high level of production sees this film at a fairly short 86 minutes deliver a superbly crafted work that film enthusiasts should strongly consider. Top stuff.

My Summer of Love (2004) is an independent British film directed by Pawel Pawlikovski which tells about two 16-year-old girls from different worlds, social groups and interests, who met one warm and sunny summer (and this happens in England) in idyllic rural Yorkshire. Mona (Natalie Press), a redhead with freckles lives in a small provincial town, comes from a working family, rides a scooter with no motor and lives with her older brother Phil (Paddy Considine - as always convincing and pleasure to watch, although his role is rather thankless and the least interesting). Phil recently returned from prison, where he became a Born Again Christian. Upon his return, Phil rebuilt the pub, which he and Mona inherited from their mother into a house of worship. Natalie Press is simply delightful as Mona. She is impulsive, trusting, cynical and lonely, tired and bored with poverty and dead end existence. She is not well educated but is observant and has no illusions regarding what future has in store for her. After this role, Press continues to appear in British independent films; the most notable and interesting of all - "Night Watch" (2008) by Peter Greenaway. The second girl, Tamsin - thin, slim, dark-haired student of the prestigious private school, where she had a negative impact on classmates, is the daughter of wealthy parents who are never home. She is well-read, speaks the proper literary language, adores Edith Piaf and cites the well-known philosophers. She is ironic and terribly bored in her parents' suburban castle, where she spends the summer. One day while riding the horse, she meets a funny freckled girl with unruly mane of red hair. Emily Blunt was 21 when she played 16 years old charming manipulator Tamsin. In two years after My Summer of Love, Blunt practically stole all her scenes in the blockbuster "The Devil Wears Prada" from Hollywood more famous actress Anne Hathaway. The role of Tamsin did not make Emily Blunt an overnight star but it without doubt signaled of her promising future in acting. As different as they are, Tamsin and Mona shared one thing - loneliness, and they become fast friends with Mona staying overnight at Tamsin's house and spending all days together. The relationship progressed from the mutual interest to friendship to the intimacy when the girls become un-separated and sexually attracted to each other. Soon they promised never ever separate and be always together. It seemed that summer and their love would never end but as it is often the case, one loves without reservation truly and deeply, and the other takes the love and devotion for granted. I read some comments from the viewers rather disappointed with the ending. I personally found it quite logical and the only possible resolution or the Summer of Love. The film is short and lasts less than one and a half hours but during this time we have an opportunity to learn about heroines, to understand their motivations, longings and the reasons behind their actions. My Summer of Love is an interesting psychological drama, which explores the yearning of young souls and bodies, their desires and interests, and sadly concludes that after summer always comes autumn, time to return to the decadent temptations of a big city and to the boredom of provincial stalemate existence. Love, or however you would call the strong and mutual attraction that brought the girls together, would be replaced by bitter disappointment and shattered dreams. According to many interviews with the film writer/director, Pawel Pawlikowski, he did not try to make a film about typical teenage life in England, he wanted to give it a certain "timeless feeling". I think he succeeded in his intentions. The film takes place in Yorkshire, England in the 80s or was it the 70s? There are no computers, cell phones or iPods in sight, so, this story could happen any time at any place. It is honest, convincing, and engrossing. Both young actresses deserved and shared an Evening Standard British Film award for Most Promising Newcomer. BAFTA awarded the film with Alexander Korda Award for Best British Film in 2005.
