The Pact (2012) directed by Nicholas McCarthy is a modern diamond in the ruff. everything about this film is astounding. presumably produced under a small budget it is actually very impressive what McCarthy was able to accomplish here. what's even more impressive is that not only did he direct the movie but he also wrote it. the story that we are told here is paced and written with great diligence and seems as if it's written by a veteran screenwriter. this being McCarthy's first feature length effort only strengthens his name and makes me want to watch whatever pops up next in his filmography. so without further ado let's get into the details of what makes this film work as well as it does.as I've already mentioned, the script is an extremely important part of what makes the film work so well. while the movie is categorized as a horror movie primarily it also works as a great mystery with an interesting story-line. we are not fed much backstory at all and are forced to immerse ourselves into the mystery of what's going on. smartly written and paced well the story reveals what it needs to reveal at the right times and builds into an impressive and exhilarating ending sequence that truly is terrifying. though the ending is indeed the scariest and most tension filled part of the film, some more subtle scares are sprinkled throughout the run time and are all very effective and are not just there for the sake of the scare. each of these scenes actually play into the story and make the end product that much more cohesive.another great strength of the film would be the camera work. specifically the scenes filmed inside the creepy house. narrow and dimly lit hallways are used to the fullest potential and are filmed in way that creates some genuine tension and suspense. this camera work is obviously complemented by some great lighting as well as a pulse pounding score that really delivers some chills. on a side note the movie is pretty light on blood and gore. while this isn't a real issue, i do feel as if a little more blood (not necessarily gore) could have been used to add more impact to certain scenes and make them more grisly and raw. but it really isn't a big issue. in terms of atmosphere there really isn't one. this would be one of the few real negatives in the film. it could have really benefited from a more prominent colour pallet or some atmospheric fog or lighting in the supernatural scenes. I've already mentioned the lighting and score are great but they don't really produce any CLASSIC scenes that are really memorable for the atmosphere created alone. those scenes are more memorable for solid camera work and suspense/tension rather than atmosphere. this doesn't break the film, it simply leaves something to be desired.the acting by our lead female actress named Caity Lotz is nothing short of wonderful. I was pleasantly surprised by her performance and her character was easy to get behind and root for. Mark Steger plays judas with ease, looking very creepy and unnerving in each scene he is in. Casper Van Dien is in the film as well as a supporting character but wasn't really utilized as much as he should have been. I am by no means a fan of his, but i am aware that he can be a competent actor within B-movie territory and could have been utilized as a supporting character of more importance, or not have been there at all. by more importance I mean in terms of character development rather than plot development. last but not least is Hayley Hudson. she does a good job as Stevie but once again could have be utilized much more. being in just the one scene she made an impact but McCarthy could have given her just a tad more screen time to beef up that scene and make it a little more intense. Overall The Pact is a memorable horror/mystery with a well written script, good acting from the lead actress, some great camera work, lighting, and a great score. the scares in the film are effective and there are many scenes of genuine suspense and tension. the only real negatives are the lack of true atmosphere, and the under utilization of the supporting characters.the verdict: 8.5/10

This is a beautifully and thoughtfully made horror/thriller that manages to sustain the creep factor throughout. I won't be spoiling anything by telling you that it's a supernatural tale. This establishes itself quite early on in the piece which I initially found disappointing. I'm partial to those slow burn movies that leave you wondering if there is a supernatural element going on at all. The fact this film introduces this early on certainly does not take away from chill factor and manages to maintain a strong sense of mystery which adds to the unsettling nature of the story. You get to establish a great empathy for the main character, Annie, thanks largely to the great performance of Caity Lotz while she tries to figure out what the hell is going in her childhood home after her mother has passed away and why her sister has disappeared. The home and setting is a character in itself. A very small, drab home with 60's/70's decor becomes an incredibly creepy setting, even with the bright San Pedro sun shining outside which filters into the home in a dark golden glow as you get to explore every inch of it during the film. Knowing that Annie and her sister's childhood was traumatic at the hands of their mother adds to the malevolent personality of the house. The atmosphere of this film reminds me a little of Absentia, another great film you should check out. There were moments where my heart jumped without the use of the clichéd, annoying jump scare which seems to be popular these days. A sense of dread builds and builds to a very satisfying climax. The less you know about this going in, the better. Check it out, it's well worth it.

A sleeper hit in 2012, "The Pact" directed by Nicholas McCarthy melds many common horror themes into one thoroughly haunting and creepy movie. Actress Caity Lotz, who looks a lot like Lindsay Lohan but with out the baggage, plays Annie, who comes back home to attend the funeral of her estranged mother only to find the house she grew up in is still hiding secrets. The film opens with Annie's sister, a recovering drug addict, already at the house and Skyping with her daughter. The next day as Annie arrives (on a motorcycle) her sister is nowhere to be found. Thinking she is just on another bender, Annie doesn't put much thought into it. The house itself just has an altogether uneasy feel to it with its over abundance of religious artifacts and of course it's old and creaky doors and floorboards. There are also times when Annie is roaming around in the dark investigating noises. All these scenes feel necessary to build the suspense of the scenes to come and really don't feel forced like many other films do. After her mothers funeral Annie meets up with her cousin, who is looking after her little niece. They end up staying overnight at the house but vanish when Annie comes looking for them in the morning. When Annie suffers a frightening incident of her own at the house she goes to the police and enlists the help of Officer Creek to further investigate. What they find is quite disturbing and tries to offer some explanation as to what's been going on. Annie does some investigating on her own and with some ghostly help unearths some troubling family history. She also gets some help from Stevie a girl she knew from high school, who just happens to be blind, and a medium, and looks extremely pale. Weird I know but just go with it. With the help of some supernatural forces Annie must deal with the very real threat that lives within the houses walls. "The Pact" is well made for its budget, even if we've seen some of this stuff before. The story is well structured and thought out, with some wonderfully creepy characters and tense feeling throughout.

It's a low budget horror movie, but not cheesy in the least. There is no cheesy fake blood and gore, no sex crazed teenagers, and no topples bubble headed blond's running from a psycho killer. No cheap thrills here, just a very complex and layered plot with plenty of twist and turns. The movie never once lost my attention nor did I ever get lost in the plot. The movie moved slow enough to build likable characters and to build up suspense, but also wasn't so slow that it lost my interest.I loved watching Annie as she went through the motions of loss and anger and then fear, and then ultimately the courage to discover clues and dig up old family secrets.
