Are there still people who are watching shark movies in the twenty-first century? Apparently so but since there wasn't anything else on television, I still gave The Reef a shot. It was a solid movie, no more, no less. The story is as simple as it gets. Five friends go on a sailing trip but their ship capsizes. Four friends decide to swim to the next Island while one of them stays on the capsized ship. They are soon hunted down by a Great White Shark and try to survive. On the positive side, the movie has a few solid jump scares in the first half and some tense moments in the second half that keep the tension high. Secondly, the film avoids special effects and actually uses genuine shark footage which gives the film a more realistic touch since the animal isn't portrayed as a brutal beast but rather as an intelligent predator. Thirdly, even though the characters are lacking depth, they aren't stereotypical and the movie only offers one predictable scene with a hysterically screaming woman. On the negative side, the movie gets slightly dull despite its relatively short running time as patterns are particularly repetitive in the second half. The fate of one of the characters and the ship is never really explained for unknown reasons. The film ends with a boring short written epilogue instead of offering a proper conclusion as if the producers had run out of funds. In conclusion, this film is only interesting for shark movie fans and if there's really nothing else on television. The film is neither bad nor good which makes it rather forgettable.

The Reef (2010) is a movie directed by Andrew Traucki. It's a new generation shark movie, and probably the one that gets closest to being a horror movie. It's an Australian movie so the actor's accent might be a problem for non-native English speakers that aren't used to it, I recommend toggling the subtitles on if possible. The movie starts off in medias res, with a group of friends heading to Indonesia with a sailboat. We find out eventually, that two of the protagonists had a relationship in the past, that functions as side story that isn't too relevant, especially towards the end. During the trip the sailboat hits the bottom of the reef and tips over, making it unable for the characters to proceed. They choose to swim to the nearest island, about 12 miles from the shore, but a great white shark that swims in the area won't make things easy for them.As I am always kind of skeptic about new shark movies, I didn't have high hopes for this one either. But it turned out to be better than what I expected it to be. As I said, it has some jump scares and it's the most realistic shark movie I have seen. It is not based on a true story but it could have easily been. It's the only shark movie that made me think twice before jumping into deep waters again. In my opinion, the acting was good, with a lot of screaming and macabre reactions, that really gave me the feeling that I was watching a real event and not a movie. It's nothing too extreme, but that's exactly how a horror shark movie should be, realistic.I would recommend this movie, alongside with Steven Spielberg's Jaws, as the shark movies you need to watch as a shark fanatic. Solid plot, good cast and overall a more than average shark movie worth watching.

Having enjoyed the terrible Sharknado franchise for the ridiculous movie plots and ideas, I thought I would try something similar. This; however, was awful. There was a real lack of action scenes, a lack of any acting and a lot of just watching people sit in the water! There was no comedy element like in Sharknado, there was a lack of horror and a lack of an actual movie. This movie earns itself a new movie genre, bland.Based on an apparent true story where a tiger shark attacked a group, in the movie a great white shark was used, so it cannot even be put in the documentary/reconstruction category. This is the worst movie I have seen but I would only recommend this to someone who wants to learn more about floating in the ocean.

The Reef surrounds 5 people who decides to go on a little trip to an isolated island with their boat but unfortunately for them the boat gets damaged and tipped over. They discuss what to to next, either stay and hope to be rescued or head for the island they just visited (by the time of this they are far away from the island). After a long discussion and a few doubts 4 of them decides to leave and swim for shore and the last one decides to stay. This is a very well made shark movie and I believe that they had a real shark while making this movie which makes the whole movie so much more horrifying. The underwater point of views for the character Luke along with some tense and scary musical score makes it so scary and you really feel like you are a part of the movie. At parts it looks like the shark comes out from the shadows and just gets closer and closer for each second and your heartbeat gets faster and faster (great filmmaking right there!). Apparently The Reef is based on a true story which makes it even more terrifying (similar to another Australian horror movie called Wolf Creek). In recent years we have gotten cheap looking CGI and low budget shark movies like Sharknado and if you are tired of that make sure to check out The Reef, it's one of very few "serious" shark movies to have come out in the past 5 years. My rating, 8/10 stars.
