I saw Michelle Yeoh first in Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), next in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), then in Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) before I saw her in the film under review, Wing Chun (1994).In the first three films, hers was a strong, polished presence, showing an accomplished actor capable of nuance as well as swift direct action. The 1997 and 2000 films showed her physical prowess as well, but by the 2005 film, her acting alone was impressive.Wing Chun was a bit of a pleasant surprise. The screenplay, the direction, and the production values clearly did not make full use Yeoh's abilities. On the other hand, it was funny, sweet, and moved along to a pleasant conclusion. The screenplay and the other actors were just good enough to carry the film to the next part where Yeoh was present.Wing Chun the character was a woman who had moved away from her early home to study kung fu in seclusion. Later in life, she was fine with helping protect from bandits the town where Aunty Fong did business. She expected to live out her life with her dignity, but not have a husband.Life changed for her when her childhood sweetheart Pok To rolled into town; she recognized him, but he did not recognize her, which started a sequence of misadventures. The leader of the bandits (Flying Chimpanzee) gets discouraged with being thwarted by Wing Chun, and decided to make a cause of her. This involved lots of choreographed kung fu fighting, fighting with weapons, fighting on horseback, and so on.The fighting and the romantic entanglements resolve in ways that were happy for almost everyone.----Scores----Cinematography: 9/10 Very good in most of the film.Sound: 8/10 Fine, except for the over the top Foley for the fighting sequences.Acting: 8/10 The main players were fine, but many of the supporting cast not as much.Screenplay: 8/10 This is the best comedy I've seen in many years.

Kim Wing Chun is a skilled kung fu master; well "mistress" to be correct, although you wouldn't know it since she dresses like a man and has no interest in the opposite sex. She helps her Aunt Abacus (whose bad breath and language ensure she is also alone) in their tofu shop – and they get extra help when they take in a beautiful widow Charmy. Charmy is a hit with the male members of the town but unfortunately it isn't all for the best since this includes a local group of bandits and also Wing Chun's long lost love, who mistakes Charmy for Wing Chun and mistakes Wing Chun for her own male lover. There are some viewers here who seem to have taken a dislike to this film on the basis that nobody could ever mistake a woman (in particular such a beautiful woman) for a man simply because of clothing. It seems a fair point but from my point of view this device was good enough for Shakespeare to use it several times so it is probably good enough for the plot of a comic martial arts movie. Those expecting it to be a serious affair though, should look elsewhere because Wing Chun is knowingly silly and fine with it. The plotting is silly but it carries it with a constant sense of fun that is through the dialogue, characters and action. There are loads of innuendo and flirty comedy that is enjoyably light and the action is similarly excessive and silly while still being impressive. The wire work is perhaps overdone but mostly it looks good and the fight choreography is slick while the camera doesn't edit around the skill of those involved – although the speeding up of the camera stock seems unnecessary. The performances vary and disappointingly one of the weaker ones comes from one of the names that attracted me to the film – Yen. Yen mugs a bit too much and comes off as too young and too light to be a match for Wing Chun, his comic touch isn't really here either and often it just feels like he is pulling faces. On the other side Yeoh is really good – she judges her character well so that she works in the action and the comedy, working well with whomever she is in the scene with. Yuen King-Tan is a nice change of pace (often the comic side-kick is a man) and although her character is large and loud, she is very funny. Yan is pretty but also works as a comic thanks to her flirting with everyone. Lee, Chu and Chui are also good here. Woo-Ping maybe overdoes the wire work but his direction of the action is solid; on the comedy side he also likes things OTT but for some reason the film's biggest problem is that it has terribly earnest musical tracks running throughout. These give the film an odd tone too often and it does hurt it because it detracts from the light entertainment feel the majority of the content has.Despite this though Wing Chun is actually pretty good. It won't please many purists and it doesn't make the best of Donnie Yen, but it is funny in a silly and flirty way – in particular the three female leads running rings round the men adds something fresh to it. Worth seeing if you are in the mood for good martial arts action within a light entertainment "Carry On" style film.

First of all, ''Wing Chun is a system of Chinese martial arts with an emphasis on close-range striking and interception and low kicks. (It also features the use of weapons)'''. So, the name of the movie is part of because of Michelle's Yeoh character and part of because the martial arts she practices. And I really like this Chinese movie with a simple story, since it is very delightful to watch, and we have Michelle before she coming the big celebrity she is now. ( And known as ''Michelle Khan'')Wing Chun, is a woman living in a remote village attacked by robbers and thieves all the time. She helps to protect the city and is very well known because of that, but since she lives in a male-based society she has many problems with men and love in general. One day, assassins kidnaps one of her friends, and she goes after them to save her. This movie has a lot of action and a lot of humor. :) Impossible not to like!

Can't tell anything worth any compliment in such an industrial product of HongKong Banal character, stereotyped script and humor. You can't see any performance in this movie. I was cheated by the rating at IMDb, otherwise I would have never watched this kind of "fast food" movie. The only thing I recognized is that this is another HongKong entertaining picture which was already old-fashioned by that time. Swordsmen film can be extremely touching or thought-provoking, but not in this way, adding some romantic plots as spice in a bowl of plain rice. However, it has a happy ending. The head of thieves decided to change their living all of a sudden. I just can't accept it especially the decision was made rightly after the lose of fight, and before which, they robbed a pretty girl. What a drama!
