After building his dream house, architect Newton Davis proposes marriage to his girlfriend, only to be summarily rejected. He seeks solace in a one-night stand with a waitress, never imagining that a woman he slept with once would end up posing as his wife. Gwen's ruse is so effective that by the time Newton learns of his "marriage," the entire town feels like they know him.

It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.

Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.

'HouseSitter', despite its flaws, is Good Fun! A light-hearted comedy, that is meant for all ages. 'HouseSitter' Synopsis: Con artist Gwen moves into Newton's empty house without his knowledge, and begins setting up house posing as his new wife.'HouseSitter' is overall a pleasant comedy, but a slow first-hour plays a spoilsport. Its the second-hour, where all the fun begins & the laughs come in, with a rib-tickling culmination. The first-hour needed to be faster & funnier, for sure.Mark Stein's Screenplay doesn't begin in the right mood, but picks up in the second-hour & delivers a lot of laughs. Frank Oz's Direction, as always, is perfect. Cinematography, Editing & Art Design, are excellent.Performance-Wise: Goldie Hawn & Steve Martin are delightful, as always. Hawn is spontaneous all through, while Martin dominates the show with his impeccable sense of comic-timing. Dana Delany is proficient. Julie Harris & Donald Moffat are first-rate. Richard B. Shull is fantastic. On the whole, 'HouseSitter' is a decent watch.

One of the funniest films I've watched. Every time I watch it I laugh- How many films do that? Goldie Hawn and Steve Martin are perfectly cast and keep the laughs coming. This film will always raise a smile and cause a laugh. This is also one of my favourite Goldie Hawn films. Funniest part for me was when Gwen (Goldie's character) is talking to Davis (Martin's character) and Davis trips over the couch and falls to the floor hitting the table and then stands up like nothing has gone on, and Gwen carries on talking-even after looking at the table L.O.L If you see it advertised on TV or see it in the DVD store, buy it, don't hesitate.

The genre of romantic comedy is one that has long since settled into a rut that is comfortable for faithful viewers and film-makers alike... the symbiosis of the former group making it worthwhile for the latter to spend millions is thus kept intact, leaving us with only one place to expect anything fresh, any spark of originality from, as far as these films go: The overall and specific ideas behind individual ones. I can't think of another movie that has the same as this one. The plot is interesting and develops nicely throughout, with genuine surprises along the way. This is sporadically funny, although several occurrences are downright hilarious. The writing varies, and a lot of the material, and that goes for jokes, gags and the script in general, come off as if they were mainly going for just exactly being above the minimum required. "Passable". The caricatures that inhabit this are paper-thin stereotypes that keep playing the one note they've been provided, until(and after) their poor, punished instruments break. The acting is fine, but every single famous person in the cast has done better elsewhere. There's no violence, mild sensuality, and language is reasonable in both amount and tone. I recommend this to the biggest fans of Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn. 6/10

Off the back of his very funny 'con-artist' comedy "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels", Frank Oz brings a film to us with a similar theme. Goldie Hawn is "Gwen", a woman who conjures up lie after fantastic lie, whilst Steve Martin is her flabbergasted 'husband', 'Newton Davis'. "Housesitter" is a somewhat silly film, but leads Martin and Hawn do manage to carry the comedy well. Its predictability does not detract from its value, nor the fact that it remains quite a funny picture. It may not be a riot, but it most certainly will make you laugh. Also starred Dana Delaney, Julie Harris and Peter MacNicol.Sunday, August 9, 1992 - Hoyts Forest Hill Chase
