Strange Magic (2015)

It's hard to see any effort in the film. There's no comedy to speak of, no real drama and, worst of all.

I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.

It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.

This movie left a nut tied in my stomach as I watched the unrealistic and unexpected romance evolve between Bob king and Marianne. I must say "I didn't see that coming". AlThough Strange Magic has those music going but it didn't sit well for a children fairy tale. It was supposed to be a happy ending but for many like me, it was unexpected.

In this era of weak plots, overboard effects, and pathetic attempts at humor, Lucas manages to deliver a film combining music drama comedy and more in an intelligent format suitable for the whole family! In particular, the prisoner scene in the dark forest was a hilariously nice touch - I rewound the scene at least a dozen times, and laughed even harder with each viewing. You should definitely give this film a shot!

Although the beginning is a little fast paced, it's understandable since movies only have about two hours to get across the story, I still came to appreciate it. The character designs are interesting and show a lot about each character's individual personality without much need of explanation. Characters have clean cut personalities and while it does rely on a lot of character arch-types it's not necessarily bad and it ends up working out pretty well. The fact that previous events still have an effect on the plot is a refreshing change and the foreshadowing - while a bit on the nose - is not the worst I've ever seen. The editing is well done, the visuals attractive and there's nothing wrong with a legitimately strong female protagonist who actually has a personality.

As much as I hate giving bad feedback on my reviews, it saddens me to give this movie a neutral score.While I do understand the target audience is young girls, categorizing this movie to any other Barbie or fairies movies, it still has no excuse for its way of outright making you cringe nonstop. Although my mood was completely killed by the constant musicals from dreadful pop songs -my boyfriend couldn't stand it after 8 minutes into the movie so I was left alone to watch it- the cheesiness and cliché plot, I really enjoyed the graphics, effects, colors, excellent effort put into the backgrounds and animation, all of the characters, the silly humor. I'm really not the type to hate musicals, but this one just annoyed me to the point where I was watching it just out of curiosity. I'm giving this movie a -6, and frankly I would have given it at least an 8 if I didn't grind my teeth every time they started singing.Anyway, I didn't hate it, but I wouldn't watch it again. But if you're the kinda person that really likes musicals and cheesy plots, happy endings, love etc, you'll definitely like this movie! But most of us sourpuss people will have to skip.
