The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.

The movie is made so realistic it has a lot of that WoW feeling at the right moments and never tooo over the top. the suspense is done so well and the emotion is felt. Very well put together with the music and all.

Cool thrillerMaybe it is a little slower, on the border with the boring, in the first part, but it makes up for it in the second half. I do not know why they count it into the horror genre, although it is a little tense and sometimes bloody, but only for moments. It's more dramatic than it's scary.7/10

As this film opens Sara, a blind woman, appears to panic, convinced that somebody is in her house with her; she goes to the cellar and finds a stool, above it there is a noose that she puts round her neck. The stool is kicked away and as she hangs her twin sister, Julia, collapses clutching her neck. Julia and her husband head to Sara's house and discover the body. The police are sure that it was suicide but Julia isn't so sure. Her husband advises her to accept what the police say as any stress could accelerate her own degenerative eye condition. She ignores him and starts to learn more about her sister; apparently she had been seen with a man but nobody can recall any details about him. The janitor at the hotel Sara went with the man cautions Julia that he is a 'man who lives in the shadows', a dangerous individual. Soon people around Julia start to die and her eyesight gets worse. She is given the treatment that will hopefully restore her vision but for the next two weeks she must keep her eyes bandaged. During this time she will ultimately find the killer but will she find out soon enough to save her own life? When I sat down to watch this all I knew about it was what it said on the DVD box and as there were prominent references to 'The Orphanage' and Guillermo del Toro I assumed there would be a supernatural element to the story… indeed that still remained a distinct possibility until the killer was finally exposed. Director Guillem Morales does a fine job keeping the tension high; this is aided by the fact that the viewer never sees the face of anybody Julia can't see. When the facts about killer are finally revealed it isn't too much of a surprise and from the reveal to the end things are more melodramatic than chilling… although there are still some good scares to be had. Belén Rueda does a really good job as Julia; she really carries the film as she is rarely off screen. The rest of the cast are solid as well. Overall I'd recommend this do anybody wanting a decent chiller that relies on atmosphere rather than resorting to jump-scares and gore. These comments are based on watching the film in Spanish with English subtitles.

"Los Ojos De Julia" may be a notch below "El Cuerpo", which came out two years later and has some of the same people involved in its making, but it's still a very good thriller: it's suspenseful, atmospheric, and has some extraordinarily well-conceived and executed cat-and-mouse sequences (especially near the end when Belén Rueda removes the bandages from her eyes but has to keep pretending that she can't see). The use of light and shadow, as well as the general use of the camera in this movie, should be used as teaching tools in film schools! Rueda is a vulnerable yet strong female lead, she gives the film her all. The script does contain one hard-to-swallow contrivance - or is that two: that Rueda would prefer to go back to her house right after the operation rather than being taken care of at the hospital, and that the police would let her. I also thought the ending (spoiler!) is overly cruel to her character: yes, she survives, but she has basically lost everything. She could have at least regained her eyesight. *** out of 4.
