The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.

"MSgt Thomas Beckett" (Tom Berenger) is a sniper in the United States Marine Corps who is stationed in Panama to take out rebels in that country. After losing his partner the pentagon sends a civilian named "Richard Miller" (Billy Zane) to assist him in a special operation to eliminate a rebel general doing business with a Columbian drug cartel. Although Richard is a very competent shooter the problem is that he has never actually killed anyone in combat. Likewise, he has never operated in a jungle environment and he doesn't speak Spanish. This leads MSgt Beckett to question whether his new partner will be able to perform everything required of him. To further complicate things, their superiors have come up with instructions on how to proceed to their target which don't take into account several issues and Richard gets upset when MSgt Beckett deviates from those instructions. Further friction is encountered when an enemy sniper begins to track them down as well. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that this was a pretty good film which I thought depicted the role of a sniper in a jungle environment quite well. Of course, some of the actions scenes weren't necessarily as realistic as they could have been but, as with anything in Hollywood, that goes without saying. Be that as it may, I have rated this movie as slightly above average and recommend it to those who might enjoy a film of this type.

When you want intense combat, you turn to Tom Berenger (Platoon). Here he plays a sniper in the jungle going after rebels and drug lords. Forget that the reason they are going really makes them murderers. It's just the way things have always been done.Life's a bitch, so he gets a green office type (Billy Zane) to help on the mission. He may shoot well, but he has never killed anyone.The film is in the hands of Luis Llosa, who stunk up Anaconda. He doesn't do much better here, but Berenger makes the movie worthwhile. Sure, it may be a little long - who wants to see a lot of walking through the jungle - but is is good, tense action when the time is right

Sniper is a much better movie than i thought it would be.i did think it would be entertaining,but more from a time wasting perspective than anything else.but it turns out it's a pretty tense,at times suspenseful film.it's well paced.there are no spots that drag.i wasn't bored for a minute.and the two lead actors,Tom Berenger and Billy Zane work well off each other.both are very well suited for this particular role and were very convincing.as for the degree of realism in the film,i can't speak to that,but i do know i enjoyed myself for 90 odd minutes,and sometimes it's enough to just enjoy a movie for the entertainment value.for me,Sniper is an 8/10

This is definitely Tom Berenger's signature film, he is perfect for this role and also Billy Zane did his job well in this film.The best thing about this film is it's simplicity just like predator, the jungle and well chosen music works perfectly with this film adding to the suspense. This is a generally speaking (in a non-sexist way) truly a guy film, I remember watching this with my girlfriend and I am sure she was counting the squares on the carpet after five minutes so be careful who you watch it with. I have watched this film many times and it goes on "the keeps" shelf of my DVD collection, awesome film.Unfortunately I can't say the same for the sniper films that come after this but they are watchable.
