On the eve of Independence, the chairman of the Border Commission, Sir Cyril Radcliffe decides to divide India and Pakistan into equitable halves. What the administration doesn’t account for is the line running through the middle of Begum Jaan’s brothel situated plonk on the border; with one half falling in India and the other in Pakistan.

When a movie has you begging for it to end not even half way through it's pure crap. We've all seen this movie and this characters millions of times, nothing new in it. Don't waste your time.

The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one

It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.

Begum Jaan works only because of Vidya Balan. As a performer, Vidya has never disappointed. Since her debut Parineeta, Vidya showed us why she's one versatile actor to watch out for. As Begum Jaan, Vidya gives the film her all. She's totally convincing as the owner of a brothel who's worldly wise and spouts philosophy at the drop of a hat. The only thing unconvincing about her appearance (and that's not entirely her fault!) is her unibrow. I don't understand why would the director ask Vidya to sport a unibrow while all the other girls in the brothel have perfectly shaped eyebrows. But that's just nitpicking in an otherwise brilliant performance. Now let's move on to the other aspect of this movie, I think it's the direction that falters the most. I never understood what the director is trying to tell us through this movie. He seems really confused about how to get his point through. There are a lot of scenes in the movie which don't seem to add to the actual plot of the movie. We never get to sympathise with Begum Jaan's plight to save her brothel. We know that she's emotionally attached to her house and that's about it. The time of The Partition was a tough one and we know that a lot of people were leaving their houses as they had no other choice. Then why would Begum Jaan try to challenge this movement at the cost of so many people's lives at her brothel? I mean, she's not the only one who is asked to leave her house at that time! Also, the background score seems too loud at some point and absolutely unnecessary at some. Talking about the supporting cast, I must say Vidya gets ample support from them. Gauahar Khan lends credibility to her role as Rubina, Begum's right hand woman. Pallavi Sharda also shines in some of the scenes. But the surprise package is Chunky Pandey in his never before seen evil avatar. Overall, Begum Jaan could have been a much better film had the director put some thought on how to build up an engaging plot without unnecessary melodrama and sub plots. Still, it can only be enjoyed for Vidya and Vidya's performance only!

This movie is a almost shot by shot remake of the Bengali film Rajkahini by same director and writer. The Bengali movie has many problems as it doesn't holds up to the level as the story wants. This movie was way better than the the original. The director seems to be corrected all the mistakes and gaps and made it a good movie. The acting is very good by every one specially Vidya Balan and all the girls are good. The main problem with the original is that it was not well acted by some of the supporting casts. But this one is and it gives every scene more gravitas. The contract killer character portrayal of Chunky Pandey is not as good as the character portrayal in the original movie by Jisshu Sengupta. This movie is bold as it can be on the screen. It has heavy dialogues. It is more suspenseful and more gory. The acting is good. Story is fantastic as it is known. Allover it is a very good and corrected remake of an average movie.........7/10...........

OK, we think of a Movie, movie based on feminism, Movie starring A Phenomenal actress like Vidya Balan. Movie which is based on a sensitive event like the partition, The first thing which comes in mind is... OK, we'll go for it.. But when we go and watch a nonsense going on in front of you, it's quite irkingPlot line is simple... Story of 11 prostitutes, one abused girl, one small kid, one old lady, one loyal pimp, one honest ex cop and one school master They live and spend majority of their time In a Brothel.. after the events of partition, they are asked to evacuate, but they refuse. It causes a soft, at times hard conflict between the prostitutes and the govt.Pros:1. Vidya Balan's amazing performance 2. Re introduction of amazing actors like Ashish Vidyarthi, Ila Arun, Chunky Pandey & Pitobash Tripathy 3. Bollywood debut of one of my favorite directors, Srijit Mukherjee (Autograph fame)Cons:1. Too Many irrelevant characters 2. Too much darkness 3. Too predictable 4. Full of absurdity 5. Failed attempt to bring tears in audiences' eyes 6. Portrayal of a negative image of feminism 7. Many unnecessary dialogues and R-Rated language 8. Tag line might create misconceptions amongst young ladiesRecently, we saw many Hindi movies on women empowerment like Dangal, Pink and naam Shabana.. amongst them Dangal was the best and Pink was second...Naam Shabana was quite a stupid movie (when compared to it's predecessor "Baby") but still not as pathetic as Begum jaanTruly, I wasn't interested in giving this movie a single star. But that single star is for the amazing performances by Chunky Pandey and Vidya Balan. If you ask me, I'll say, save your money for Bahubali: the conclusion. Don't waste your hard earned money and time on this trashMy review: begum jaan - Avoidable

I think the Bhatt family smokes weed every time they make a movie. This movie was utterly rubbish. They could do so much with the script, but the director just screwed up the plot. The story was just outstanding and I was expecting so much from the movie mainly because of that. The dubbing, the editing, the acting (What the hell happened to Vidya Balan?!? She used to be so much better before), everything was just awful. There was a scene in the movie where the shot had half of the actor's face in a frame. Everyone in the movie thought the theater was probably zooming in but it was actually how it was shot. I can't believe i spent $15 on this movie. I am surprised the board even let them release this movie. So disappointed seriously. Movies like this spoils Indian film industry's reputation across the world.
