This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.

The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.

This movie feels like it was made purely to piss off people who want good shows

I guess you might call EMMANUELLE one of the most influential films of all time, based purely on the amount of sequels and rip-offs that followed. Seen today, it's a rather slight and dated French erotic movie with lots of softcore sex scenes. Definitely a case of stylish over substance, although not without merit for fans of the genre. The amusingly-monikered Just Jaeckin is a dab hand at creating carefully set up establishing shots and making the most of some location shooting in Bangkok. Unusually for the genre, lead actress Sylvia Kristel seems to have been chosen for her acting performance rather than her looks, because she's quite convincing as the woman undergoing an odyssey of self-discovery.I didn't think that the sex scenes were particularly erotic, but nonetheless there's fun to be had from the globetrotting antics and the other plot elements, including an unexpected round of Thai boxing! Even some tension and creepy moments towards the climax. The likes of EMMANUELLE will never be favourites of mine because this isn't my one of my preferred genres of film, but as visually artistic films go you could do a lot worse.

This is probably the first porn film that was accepted into the mainstream media. Not too many film grosses over 200 times its production cost, and gains world wide distribution.Emmanuelle is a story of Emmanuelle - a somewhat naive wife of a French diplomat assigned to Thailand, and her sexual escapades.Today, the theme looks tame, and the format dated, but when it was first introduced, it was at the forefront of the sexual revolution that was going on in the late '60s into the '70s. Just compare it to what was considered riskay in the movies of the '50s and the '60s, and it's obvious what a bombastic leap forward it was in style and content. It not only explored the topic of free sex, but lesbianism, masturbation, and sexual coaching, all rolled into one. It was the first porn film that was high art, and had story to it. It was probably the first porn that had massive women audience to it as well.Silvia Kristel was spot on actress to play the role. She really did have the right looks to play the lead. And oh how different Thailand looked then compared to today. It was the perfect setting for this story.R.I.P. Sylvia Kristel

caught this movie on my late night cable network and settled in to watch one of the great erotic masterpieces of the early seventies by erotic auteur just juecken of Gwendoline and the histoire of o fame. i did enjoy the lovely and lush scenery, theme song and exotic locales but found the pace rather slow moving for my taste. i though that Sylvia Kristel who plays the iconic role was just perfect and certainly didn't shy away from the nudity. the only part of the movie that intrigued and piqued my interest was when Kristel character met up with and began an affair with Marika green's character. immediately Kristel is fascinated by green and invites herself to tag along for the trip. you see the the two as they travel along and work side by side doing their daily chores. the way that Kristel absolutely adores and fawns over green. its' a shame that the writers didn't continue this storyline as it would have been interesting to see how it would have all played out. this one role catapulted a than un-known Kristel into super-stardom and se would go on to star in several sequels in the emmanuelle series much of it forgettable. she could not launch her career in America and what roles she did receive were usually stereotyped sexpot ones such as private lessons, Mata hair and lady chatterly's lover. it must have proved frustrating for Kristel who clearly wanted to move on from her one role. a decent flick if you're looking for something to watch on a Friday evening with a lot of skin.

"Emmanuelle" is an elegant, excellently photographed movie, but too often rolls in a syrupy pretension… It is about a young, French woman who joins her husband in Bangkok… There much of Emmanuelle's allure is that she isn't shy about her body, or even afraid to engage in sexual activity in semipublic places… There are a number of rousing, lesbian meetings very typical of French cinema, coupled with encounters with handsome, sensitive men who enjoy superficial lovemaking… The film really deals in sensual images and an over-blown, continuous repeating of its erotic philosophy… There is sensual intimacy between Emmanuelle and the other women that is rare in the cinema…My favorite moment when teen-ager Christine Boisson comes upon the nude Sylvia Kristel asleep… Without embarrassment, she leans forward and unusually caresses gently and affectionately Emmanuelle's breast with her finger
