Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.

The film may be flawed, but its message is not.

Back when the Crystal Method album "Vegas" came out in 1997, the opening track from the CD sampled a line from a movie which I never heard of so I found one with the name that ended with "Crystal". Hence, this movie, released during the holidays of 1982 when ET dominated that year in America. In France and Japan it dethroned Jedi to be the #1 movie of 1983. Years later it found new life on home video and has become a cult classic for millions of fans. The first Jim Henson movie to feature a cast of mostly puppets, The Dark Crystal has great cinematography, a killer soundtrack, great drama, and amazing special effects for its time. Kids of all ages will like this movie despite the PG rating (remember, back in pre 1984, there was no PG-13) and the hour and a half plus length. If you're near a major megaplex, this movie is being shown again in a newly restored 4k print to advertise the upcoming home rerelease on March 6th, the same date as Thor Ragnarok. Then next year a prequel series on Netflix called Age of Resistance will tell what happened before the crystal cracked.

I was 40 when I saw this, it kept me bewildered, confused, fascinated & occasionally frightened for Jen & Kira. Let us not forget the puppy. I think it was a puppy. I loved the muppet show, so I expect no less from this movie, but got so much more.As soon as the DVD came out, I bought it. This was all live action. Even if it was puppets. I found it as good as Star Wars. What can I say? By the way, did you ever see Mark Hamill on the Muppets? Hysterical. Miss Piggy tried to get him to rescue her. LOL

The Dark Crystal was one of the many fantasy films coming through the floodgate Star Wars opened in 1977; science fiction/fantasy films of its ilk were commissioned left-right-and-center, ranging from Superman, Starcrash, The Black Hole, The Lord of The Rings (1978) and Flash Gordon; The Dark Crystal is one of the more unique offerings of the 80s. It's like The Muppets crossing over with JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. The characters are unique though a little shallow at times; but the world they're in is incredibly rich and gorgeous to look at. And the music. It's probably got the most underrated film score in modern history! Just listening to it sends you on a trip to another world; either the film's world or another one.Jim Henson conceived a world that's about to be expanded upon further, thanks to Netflix's upcoming 'The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance'. It's about time we got to see some more universe-building from one of the most overlooked universes ever captured on celluloid. I'm stoked for the upcoming series being a fan of the film ever since I saw it on VHS in the early 2000s and all. I'm eager to see the story leading up to this classic movie!
