After five (or six) years of vanilla-wedded bliss, ordinary suburbanites John and Jane Smith are stuck in a huge rut. Unbeknownst to each other, they are both coolly lethal, highly-paid assassins working for rival organisations. When they discover they're each other's next target, their secret lives collide in a spicy, explosive mix of wicked comedy, pent-up passion, nonstop action and high-tech weaponry.

At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.

Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.

I guess I was expecting too much of this film. After all, it was directed by Doug Liman, whose THE BOURNE IDENTITY was an excellent movie, and as a leading lady Angelina Jolie is easy on the eye. But in the end this is another lightweight Hollywood comedy with zero substance and outlandish, unbelievable action sequences in which special effects count for everything. One of the main problems the film has is the lazy performance from Brad Pitt, on sleepwalking mode throughout, although Angelina Jolie shines opposite him. The main story about a bored suburban couple having secret lives is familiar – see TRUE LIES, for instance – and this doesn't add anything new to the concept, apart from increasingly crazy action scenes that remain cartoonish and detached even if the special effects do look nice.I normally don't care for Vince Vaughn as an actor, but he's the best thing in this film – genuinely funny in all his dialogue bits, a real scene stealer. I admit, some of the comedy isn't bad either. But at two hours this is an overlong film with lots of meandering and repetitive bits. The two stars scrub up well but the cinematography is such that it appears they're vainly posing for the whole running time. The ending's also a cop out. I wanted to like this film, I really did, but in the end the main effect of MR. & MRS. SMITH on me was to send me to sleep.

Not a great movie. It was an action-flick – neither emotionally compelling or profound in any way – and it was simply fun, explosive, and plainly romantic. The script was awful. The dialogue was weak, uninspired, boring, and what they said what was you heard; there was no depth or quality whatsoever. It was also painfully slow-moving (until about more than halfway through when the car chase took place) and the soundtrack was also really bad. The cinematography was equally terrible, with simple, boring camera- angles that did nothing to improve or enhance the actors or their surroundings/situations. It was nothing new and definitely not creative. The acting was OK. Just……OK. Pitt gives a much better performance than Jolie, who overacts with forced expressions and girl power that is just what it implies; unoriginal girl power with sexy outfits that make the female spy who she is. Yeah, she's intelligent too, but all the same, Jolie's character brings nothing new to the table. Pitt's acting, however, is much stronger and believable. Still, he's not brilliant, but at least decent and consistent. The explosive and undeniable chemistry between Pitt and Jolie carries the movie, but otherwise the film is nothing special.

If you look at this film as merely another glitzy Hollywood spy thriller/spoof -- in the grand tradition of say OUR MAN FLINT or KINGSMAN -- then it is merely an "8". As in great writing, acting, direction, casting and generally a lot of fun.So far, so good. Here is the trick -- for viewers of the future, when we mere mortals have come and gone, but the IMDb lives on, this is better viewed as a time capsule. The two stars were, to under-state it -- at the peak of their fame and charisma. I recall from the time a survey which conclusively showed, for example, that Angelina was not merely the hottest woman in show business but possibly (these surveys tend to over-state) the hottest woman on the planet.(To be fair, they only surveyed living men. If the dead had also been allowed to vote, who knows, maybe Helen of Troy would have won?) And the Bradster was also at his peak.Once you understood the hidden and secret dynamic of the film, it becomes both iconic and classic, and will be entertaining viewers for a very very long time.(PS == watch Vince Vaughn before TRUE DETECTIVE, also of historical interest)
