A dark comedy about an eclectic group of strangers invited to a downtown bar by a mutual ex-lover, Nikki Franklyn, a maddeningly sexy, unpredictable and possibly insane young woman who's recently gotten out of prison for murdering her last ex-boyfriend. The party really gets started when Nikki herself arrives, hauling her latest lover and fiancee, the morally challenged lawyer who'd been handling her case. She's mysterious about her intentions and her current and former lovers soon realize they are all caught in one of her brilliant, mischievous mind-games with possible deadly consequences. By the night's end, revenge will be had, new romance will bloom, and Nikki will have delivered on her reputation as the Sexy Evil Genius.

Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.

Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.

This is a good, well-plotted, well-acted ensemble piece. It gives the impression of having a decent writer on board – which is not that common an impression, these days. I can easily imagine it adapted as a stage play and do remember checking to see if it had originated from the stage. I was struck again by how good an actor Michelle Trachtenberg is – for years I've been seeing her give little bits of evidence that, were she only given roles to get her teeth into, she could build a really high reputation. Having said that, I really should not pick out any one of the five main actors. Each created really believable, 'screen-filling' characters and there was really good balance between them. There are subtle undercurrents: for example, watch the sub-surface rivalry and point-scoring between Zac (Seth Green) and Marvin (Harold Perrineau) – just facial expressions and body language, but made me chuckle repeatedly.Nikki (Katee Sackhoff) assembles four other characters, who turn out to be present or past lovers, for a get-together in a bar. The plot is the working out of what this charismatic and magnetic, scheming, and possibly dangerously insane character is up to, and how it fits into their shared histories - and it is enthralling. I suppose it's best called a comedy, but I could also call it a mystery‑thriller. I found fascinating the gradual working out of the individual back stories and how they feed into the equally gradual build-up to what she's been planning. The only thing that could improve it would be a bit more in the way of snappy dialogue – some memorable one-liners, perhaps – if only for the title character. This film sort of sneaked up on me. I watched it and quite liked it, felt I'd like to watch it again, so I did, and gradually, over repeating watchings, it has become one of my couple of dozen all-time favourites. I never get tired of it. It's sad that it seems to be so little known.

This movie is unworthy of the title "Sexy Evil Genius." There was nothing sexy, no real genius involved and the closest to evil was this chick's utter wackiness. Overall, the movie was boring. A bunch of people sit in a bar and talk old times about a crazy ex. The climax wasn't even close to thrilling. Instead of watching this movie, have a couple drinks and watch just about anything on TV. And since I need 10 lines to submit this review, here are some much better things to watch: "American Horror Story," "Hostages," "Sons of Anarchy," "The Black List," old "Law & Order" episodes (any of them) and "Homicide: Life on the Streets." Shoot, even "Gilligan's Island" was more entertaining!

This is a great movie. And as film, comics or any media writers/creators will tell you, the hardest scene is a couple of people sitting around a room or a table talking and keeping it interesting. This movie does just that in spades. And it's vastly entertaining. That's my point. If you understand that the practice of making that, people talking for the length of a movie, is the hardest thing to make entertaining, then just know I was fully entertained by this film. The script is brilliant and so is the directing. But take it from this guy; I don't like action movies if there's no point other than to just watch pretty explosions. I need substance. I need a story. And this has story and humor and a fantastic build up for the end result as well as great character analysis-I hate the main character until his character starts to open up. I hate the female lead until...well...see; I can't spoil that part. You just have to watch it for yourself. People who don't like this sort of movie, this "12 angry men" style of movie, just aren't going to like this film. There's no point in berating it if you aren't into fun, thriller, character driven films. If you're into great dialog, wonderful acting, suspense, "whodunits", Buffy the Vampire Slayer, movies about old friends, movies about old enemies, movies about people with layers, then this movie is for you.

I actually think this was a great movie. The plot twists with the best of them, taking the emotional load with it.In the same vein as other movies of its kind such as My Dinner with Andre and Before Sunrise, Sexy Evil Genius was superbly brought to life through the power of the actors and the dialogue alone. It's pretty tough to keep things in a movie such as this both unpredictable and believable. We don't know what's going on inside the minds of anyone and neither do the characters in this story. Yet we have these customs, these social tools used to interact with people to get through day to day life predictably. We see this play out as strangers meet and talk and get to know each other. These customs begin to break down and become useless as someone stops following the rules. The characters are left with rapidly changing speculation and mounting anxiety as the story plays out.I had just two problems with the film. One where a firearm's barrel was touched directly by the skin not even a minute after it was fired more than once. The other when a woman who was viciously assaulted by a large angry man was left without even a bruise. This is a definite must see for anyone who enjoys some good drama where the action is primarily expressed in words. One final note, I'm happy to see that homosexuality in film has reached the point where no matter whether people enjoyed the film or not, it's not thought abnormal enough to be worth commenting on. A normal, acceptable part of our culture :)
