This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

Funny, witty, this film looks at what it would be like to be a therapists in a child's body, and to have your first love inject itself into your life at tender impressionable teenage years. This is a Scottish examination of the period of angst we all suffer growing up. Some young men and women find their first loves early on, others wait until their up in their years. This film looks at both. The parents of a young man with doctor like insights into both himself and his parents, but still have a severe naivete, goes through the motions of life and growing up. Subjected to bullying, subjected to angst ridden women, subjected to neighborly intrigue, our young protagonist seeks out a life righting wrongs and addressing what he sees are problems in the world and his personal life. It's subtle and touching. A few swear words, some mild raunchy humor, this film shows that teenagers who swear and have hormones jumping and running about their system is fairly universal. See it once.

I thought as a debut film it was pretty good but as a film it wasn't fantastic. It tried to do too much, it should of just stuck with a single theme, like it was too much of a coming of age idea for trying too evoke serious thoughts, probably like a 7/10. It should of went with more dark style humour and stuck with the serious side of the issues of mentality and love and left the coming of age as a sorta back ground theme.Richard Ayoade has done a good job directing on a low budget, although I was expecting a little more humour from him. I would recommend watching it if you are a fan of films but if you just want to watch a film to pass time I would keep looking as this is not the film for you. In conclusion, it was a good debut from Richard Ayoade as a director although the film is just a high average, future directed films by Richard Ayoade will hopefully only get better and he will put more of his style into it. Looking forward to his future films.

Submarine is a coming of age teen romance, dramedy set in Wales directed by newcomer Richard Ayoade. The movie possesses far more charm than most adolescent dramedies while dealing with delicate topic's adolescents face such as romance and family deterioration. The movie revolves around 15 year old Oliver Tate as he undergoes a period of striving for meaning in life while attempting to keep his parents relationship alive. He develops a romantic relationship with a girl called Jordanna which aids to the progression of the story and Oliver's development. The movie is very quirky projecting a deadpan like humor consistently through out all the actors. The cinematography is beautiful due to the beautiful camera angles and the entertaining scenery. Even though a lot of the movie takes place in industrial places the imagery still looks stunning. A couple of scenes ran to long and I felt they could have been changed or switched for other scenes.Over all 7.5/10 good film definitely worth watching.

This was a promising debut from Richard Ayoade. It had its lulls, especially after the funny opening few scenes. It did made me think how hard it is to keep a quirk comedy going without seeming to be trying too hard. Submarine doesn't go too far, it manages to be quirky but also quite grave and it has a solid storyline that held my interest throughout. One thing that really impressed me was the use of color. Everything is just so unglamorous; the pale blue light of the day, the homely glow in the Tate household. The style of the film is rightly going to draw comparisons Wes Anderson, but when I think of a similar family-based film like The Royal Tennenbaums it seemed more stylized, whereas Submarine is more realistic, but with some of the same quirky characters.Lloyd was hard to gauge for me. I never knew what direction he'd go, whether he'd prove to be the hero or end up going on a killing spree. It's nice to see characters that aren't predictable. His romance was also quite believable. Despite the fact that I felt Jordana, the girl of his dreams, doesn't even seem like someone he'd end up staying with for long (the scene where Lloyd tries to share his interests with her emphasizes that) I could still definitely see Lloyd falling in love with her regardless. The music was in keeping with the feel of the film. I hadn't heard Alex Turner outside of the Arctic Monkeys before and he was very good.Overall it was entertaining, but suffered from a few patches that dragged on. If the pace was more consistent in the mid-section I'd make it a 4/5, but as it is it's entertaining and definitely worth watching.
