The Count of Monte Cristo (1954)
Edmond Dantes is falsely accused by those jealous of his good fortune and is sentenced to spend the rest of his life in the notorious island prison, Chateau d'If. While imprisoned, he meets Abbe Faria, a fellow prisoner whom everyone believes to be mad. The Abbe tells Edmond of a fantastic treasure hidden away on a tiny island that only he knows the location of. After many years in prison, the old Abbe dies, and Edmond escapes disguised as the dead body. Now free, Edmond must find the treasure the Abbe told him of so he can use the new-found wealth to exact revenge on those who have wronged him.

Betrayal: Marseille, 1814. Edmond Dantès, a young sailor promoted to the rank of first mate, is about to marry Mercédès. But, accused of treason by his fellow sailors, jealous of his situation, he is arrested, found guilty, and locked-up in the Château d'If. He remains there for eighteen long years.
Revenge: 1832. Edmond Dantès has succeeded in escaping and has found the treasure revealed by Abbé Faria before his death. Under the name of the Count of Monte Cristo, he is accepted into Parisian high society, but his sole aim is to take revenge on those who had him unjustly condemned.
