In episode one, we are introduced to Lee Malvo at age 16, when he took the life of young mother Keenya Cook. It's February 2002 in Tacoma, Washington. She is Malvo's first murder victim.
The snipers begin their reign of terror in suburban Montgomery County on the edge of Washington D.C., firing out of the trunk of their Chevy Caprice.
Monday, 7 October, 2002 and 13-year-old Iran Brown gets out of his aunt Tanya's car at Benjamin Tasker Middle School. A shot rings out. Iran is on the ground. The attackers are now targeting children.
It's 9 October 2002. An urgent call comes in. There has been a shooting at a Virginia gas station. The victim is Dean Harold Meyers, a 53-year-old civil engineer.
The snipers play a high-stakes game, leaving a series of cryptic clues. It's 19 days into the investigation, with 12 now dead, but the police don't have to wait long for a breakthrough.
It's day 23. Whitney Donahue hears a report on the radio with the description and licence number of the Caprice the police are looking for. He calls 911 - the snipers' reckoning begins.
