Mike Holmes examines a recently renovated home where the problems on the surface are only the tip of the iceberg. Things sound like trouble starting with the furnace – but that’s only the beginning. When Mike and his crew start pulling up floors and tearing down walls they discover disaster after disaster, and nothing is leveling out. Sledgehammers to the kitchen floor compromised structure, cutting corners in the bathroom led to mould and there’s asbestos in the basement. These are just some of the problems Mike and his crew have to fix. But Mike sets his sights to make a wrong situation right.

Mike Holmes is called to a house that is nothing more than a bad shell. After the homeowners paid a contractor to build a second story addition, he takes off to Europe, leaving the inside of their home exposed to heavy rains for six days. The basement is destroyed and becomes a breeding ground for mould, dry rot, and the biggest nest of ants Mike has ever seen. Everything needs to go, including all of the homeowners’ belongings. The entire layout is re-designed, structure needs to be reinforced and Mike closes in on getting the job done right.

After Mike and his crew take on the challenge of rebuilding a home that was only inches away from being a complete demo, they start transforming what was once an open wound into an open-concept home. But it doesn’t come easy. Mike has already put in $114,000 in labour and repairs but the house still needs insulation, drywall, four bathrooms, a kitchen, two fireplaces plus all the electrical, plumbing and HVAC finished. Mike sends for reinforcements and brings in pro after pro to make sure he delivers a house that not only looks good on the surface but is built right from the ground up.

Mike Holmes investigates a house recently retrofitted with a substance that has been banned in Canada for decades. The homeowners start to show health issues that could be linked to the Urea Formaldehyde insulation in their home. But Mike and his crew soon discover the cause of their symptoms goes beyond their walls. What starts as a problem with their insulation quickly turns into a total demo and Mike is faced with a decision he’s reluctant to make.

A high school teacher is run down by a van after his home is vandalized. Tragically, his recovery means learning how to walk again and the ones responsible have yet to be caught. But Mike rises to the challenge to make this horrible situation right and the long road to recovery a little easier. The crew and sub trades rally behind him and go the distance. They start by building a fully accessible backyard oasis complete with hot tub, his and her matching dens in the basement and a display shelf that’s a shoe-in. But Mike doesn’t stop there, even bringing in boxing legend George Chuvalo to deliver this knockout performance.

Rocco and Stephanie thought they bought the house of their dreams. But all the lipstick and mascara was hiding a nightmare and the measures that were supposed to protect them failed. City inspectors approved the renovations made to their home and now they have to admit they didn’t do their job. There’s a baby on the way and no one’s budging so Mike steps forward to do what no one else will.
