Before Us takes an unconventional approach to the adoption narrative, exploring the ramifications of the filmmaker’s mom’s secrets and placing them within the context of a 1960s counterculture that devalued women and children, an adoption industry that viewed illegitimate pregnancy as a pathology, and a society without easy access to birth control.
