This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
The movie's not perfect, but it sticks the landing of its message. It was engaging - thrilling at times - and I personally thought it was a great time.
The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
As a non-hip hop aficionado, I still found this a compelling film. I watch these types of documentaries to help me understand the music and look for the meaning behind the words. This film gives insight into the New York Police Department and how they targeted or profiled rappers. I think it was initial to be of help in compromising situations, but ultimately became something more negative. What do the cops really think and feel about that world? What ever they "say," actions speak louder than words. Look inside their binder at all the faces and names we hear about on the radio and TV, and hear what the NYPD doesn't want you to know. You can't get anymore real than this.
