A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.

This film, about legendary Swedish underground singer Freddie Wadling, could be called a documentary, but most of all it's a mysterious mosaic of images, music and the larger than life personality at its center. "Among the Elves" gives clues to who Freddie Wadling is and what his life is like, but the puzzle has to be assembled inside the individual viewer's mind. The vision thus created speaks of a mixture of childlike innocence and deep, dark wisdom. The odd atmosphere may do more to intensify the myth of Freddie Wadling than to serve up any cold, hard facts, but who needs fact when a semi-fictional account of the man's life and work is so much more fascinating? "Among the Elves" contains several musical clips created especially for the film, and they're worth watching for themselves, but they function best as part of this darkly gleaming work of captivating art. And that wonderful singing voice, unlike any other, binds the whole thing together beautifully.
