I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.

A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.

Finally Ramu gets his masterpiece, I believe that a filmmaker can only hit a peak like this only once. After seeing Ramu experiment with different styles I believe ramu gets it right by using the correct cinematography accompanied by the colourful and sometimes intense background music's I think it's a marriage made in haven Big B taking on Marlon Brando role here I believe the public the actor and the fraternity wanted to see this happen.I believe, right from the opening scene Big B gives a cold stare implying I am in control of this role by doing this he puts his stamp on role and states I will do this my way. I think Big B has been waiting for Junior B to learn his craft before taking on this role. Junior B to his credit has puts a lot of thought into little mannerisms for which he has receive a lot of accolades. As a die hard Big B fan its even hard to comprehend that junior B has the capacity to outdo his legend of a father. This film suggests that Junior B with performances like this and his work in Guru his starting to fill those big boots

One may be tempted to compare this to The Godfather, as it was inspired by that film, but it certainly is a different film and should be judged on its own.Ram Gopal Varma got a lot out of his actors, and the performance were first rate. Naturally, Amitabh Bachchan as Sarkar, the godfather, was fantastic. he has a coolness that never seemed to leave him except when dealing with his hotheaded son, Vishnu (Kay Kay Menon), who had no idea how to use the power given him.Abhishek Bachchan, the son of Amitabh Bachchan in real life, played the son who came home from America, and had to lead the family while the father was hospitalized. Things played out much the same as in The Godfather: he lost his girlfriend, Pooja (Katrina Kaif), he gathered the family to strike back at those who ere after his father because he wouldn't deal dope, and his positioned himself to run the family in the inevitable sequels.Good music, great acting, and an interesting twist to the familiar story.

Sarkar would be a good movie for people who haven't seen The Godfather. I personally found it to be a very bad "Indian" version. The culprit?- Definitely not the actors... they've done their best. But neither the story nor the direction was actually good. Here are the major flaws in the movie- 1) The music score-... they had the guts to believe no one would realize that a major portion of it is copied from Minority Report (exact copy). N yeah... it's not put the right way either. 2) The story isn't as deep as the The Godfather. Actually... it's like as though some 15 year old guy saw the original flick, thought he understood the whole movie n then decided to make a Hindi version out of it! 3) Character personification- Director's fault again. They've tried to... make the lead characters- "deadly" (also a specific kinda music's played to make it even more evident). I cannot call this a flaw considering business, cos' most Indian viewers like/understand only this kind of stuff. 5) The chase sequence. Even that was really bad... typical bollywood sequence- more than 6 people try to shoot a single guy... n the bullets keep missing. There was this similar sequence in Company by the same director... that scene was way realistic than this!- of course, may be that's cos' even that sequence (in Company) was a complete copy of a scene in an English movie... The Assignment I think... This movie's good for some person who's not seen any good "Mafia" English move... or someone who's never seen good movies! Of course... it's not that bad... but when u compare it... it sucks!N yeah... this isn't anywhere close to Company either- that I agree... is a good flick. I think the director just wanted to make a quick buck... this certainly can't be his best effort!Sarkar's a hit- agreed... but that's how our average viewer is! N yeah... definitely better than average Hindi movies.

when i saw the trailer of this movie, i though it would be an outstanding movie. excellent plot, excellent direction, but what stopped this movie from being an outstanding movie is, i am afraid AMITABH. the great actor raj kumar said one'' i do not consider amitabh even a good actor'' how truth full was he. from an angry man, he has turned into an ''angry old man'' in this movie. would any one compare this performance to say kamal hassan's nayagan or nana patekar's tabrez alam? i am afraid not. don't take me wrong, good entertainment, however, even though i am a big fan of his....he is limited to what he can bring to a movie like this, i couldn't help thinking would any one else had done more justice to this role. i cant even imagine him as the new GABBAR SINGH. i am just hoping he comes out with something different, other wise amjad khan would be turning in his grave............
