When a movie has you begging for it to end not even half way through it's pure crap. We've all seen this movie and this characters millions of times, nothing new in it. Don't waste your time.

As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.

The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.

Um, what happened here? Dan Abnett on script? Terrance Stamp and John Hurt as voice actors? What happened? If you know nothing about the Warhammer 40k universe, do not watch this. Very little is explained about the back story and rather than an advert it should be seen as a promotional item. Ultramarines takes place on a deserted planet, where a squad of ultramarines, a captain and an apothecary have been sent to investigate a loss of communications with the local garrison. WHat they find is a planet overrun, and with the exception of two survivors, everyone is an enemy. Well, the films plot is dull, empty, with much opportunity for character development but there's only a handful of characters who seem to exist besides firing a gun three or four times. There's a plot twist which, while unexpected, isn't well done, and the cgi is sub par at best when no one has a helmet on. There's some good voice acting, but besides that Ultramarines should only be for the die hardest of fans, ready to see contradictions galore in the plot. 2/10 - Very bad

I am not a Warhammer 40k fan but I always thought it was a cool universe and wanted to know more about it. So this movie looked like a great way of getting to know more about Warhammer 40k without having to paint any miniature figures or roll any dice. The positives: I thought the story was good and the movie was very atmospheric. The voiceovers were also good. The bad: The visuals were just poor. Even when played on a high quality 1080p upscaling DVD player, the movie looks muddy, washed-out and dated. The animation is very poor in places and the movie looks like a cutscene from an average, 10-year old PS2 game.Overall I enjoyed watching the movie but the poor visuals really subtracted from the experience.

This review contains spoilers, don't read if you haven't seen the film! They had it all: a fan base of millions, big financial backers, a setting that has mesmerized people all over the world, great actors and a huge expectancy from all the people who wanted to see it.And what did they do? They made a film that's infinitely weaker than the much shorter computer game intros that were made for the Dawn of War games! The people that made the intros (especially for the first DoW game) is immensely more gifted and has more insight, know-how and general interest in the WH40K setting than the ones making this "film".I am astonished, sad and tremendously eager to know just how this was possible? How can the makers of the game, the company of Games Workshop for instance, even begin to contemplate giving this so-called movie a "go". It's totally inconceivable.1. The so-called "marines" are on an IQ-level similar to the Orks.2. The "tactic" that these super humans use while going on this mission is so full of holes and generally just without any sort of prepared thought. Remember; these are the Ultramarines, the same warriors whose leader wrote the Codex of the Adeptus Astartes. This codex allegedly tells how a successful strategy can be obtained from thousands of different battle situations, like Sun Tzu's "The Art of War".3. The chaos marines also behaved totally without thought, and only threw themselves against the imperial marines in wave after wave. All the imperials had to do, was standing put and shoot. And these, the chaos marines, are supposed to be descended from Warmaster Horus himself, the ones that calls themselves the Black Legion. These should be the best of all chaos marines! No, this has to be forgotten and the filmmakers need to go back to their draw boards. Make a new, much improved film, and maybe I'll watch.

From a pure movie critic or general mass audience perspective this movie is not worth registering. This is not a James Cameron movie with millions of dollars in budget, but this movie has Avatar beaten by far.But if you are into science fiction, horrors and fantasy then this movie is great. It follows a team of space marines on their journey to respond to a distress signal. The movie features good plot twists, excellent thriller/horror atmosphere and very good CGI. The combat is awesome and the brutality is hilarious as only WH40K can be.The only downside is the poor sound quality used for the effects.
