As Good As It Gets

Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.

Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.

Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.

Laurie visits Danny, while Danny is studying for his chemistry test. Danny can't deal with the distractions and tells Laurie to leave him be. Laurie gets upset at the admonishment and leaves. This alters Danny's mood and he doesn't get much studying done. He fails his test the next day and Laurie has to leave without him. His professor has a change of heart and lets Danny leave after all. What ensues, is a hilarious string of misadventures, when Cusack gets taken on a wild good chase that seemingly never ends. This movie has a lot in common with another similar themed 80's film Cusack did in the 80's, The Sure Thing. It doesn't exactly replicate the formula, but it's in the same vein, just a different set-up.It strays away from the "Get the girl" formula. He is technically chasing a girl, but he already has her. The Sure Thing is much funnier, but this one is entertaining as well. This movie reinforced my opinion about how awesome the 80's were. Things weren't so prohibited back then, you could be much more creative. It has laughs, action, drama, what more could you possibly want? Most of the laughs stem from Cusack getting into wild adventures. The poor guy suffers so much bad luck that it's ridiculous, but it gave me some solid laughs. The Caribbean makes for a terrific setting as well, giving us some excellent photography and making the situations better. The finale becomes surprisingly violent and serious, but it was well done. John Cusack flourishes in this type of part. He's funny, likable, and sympathetic. How many of us have gone through hell and back to please a girl we love? I could easily empathize with that. Robert Loggia steals the show with his eccentric performance. I thought he was a hoot. Ben Stiller is wooden in an early role, but he wasn't famous like he is now. It was amusing to see him play a condescending prick. Even Ben's dad, Jerry has a role in this film. Wendy Gazelle is cute as a button, made for a good love interest for Cusack. She's one of those cute broad's from the 80's that disappeared after a while. What a shame. Overall, I enjoyed this movie. It's not as good as The Sure Thing, or Better Off Dead. But it is a perfect example of how you can let your brain relax for 90 minutes or so and be entertained. 7.2/10

I bought this great movie for $5 on DVD witch is a bargain and the movies about a man who is going to go on vacation with his girlfriend and her family to the Caribbean but he can not go because he has to re do a test that he failed and then just after his girlfriend has gone his teacher allows him to pass his test so he can go on vacation and then he gos to the airport and gets a plane to try and find her.This movie stars good actors and actress like Jhon Cusack,Jerry Stiller,Wendy Gazelle,Robert Loggia,Monte Markham and Ben Stiller.Jhon Cusack is one of my favorite actors of all time and his best movies have to be The Sure Thing,Better Off Dead,Say Anything,Con Air and Identity.There are heaps of good scenes in this movie especially the scenes in the end of the movie and over all this movie is great and its a must watch movie and my rating is 6 out of 10.

This is the movie that made me fell for John Cusack's acting. He has so much energy, so much presence in this movie, it's impossible not to like his character! Robert Loggia was also very good and the chemistry between the two makes the movie worthwhile on its own.This is an excellent action comedy: It's light, funny and enjoyable. A little comedy from the 80's, with no pretension whatsoever other then to entertain you and make you laugh… Unfortunately, the end is not that great. Those were the times when the good guy had to defeat all of its enemies within the last 10 minutes of the film. Nevertheless, the movie is entertaining and deserves to be seen.

I was flicking through the TV channels when I came across this film being broadcast. I thought John Cusack, Why not give it a go. After laughing and enjoying this film from beginning to end I was really suprised that I had never heard, of it. It is a clever, witty and easy to watch. I hope it comes out on DVD.
