I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.

It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.

what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.

I saw this film for Gaspard Ulliel. and it is far to be a disappointment. in same measure, it is a reasonable and decent explanation for the beginning of Hannibal Lecter story. and, not the last, it is an interesting challenge for the viewer. I see it as an autonomous part. it gives explanations but it is not in competition with the other parts of series. because it reminds a form of Romanticism , near to the dark horror stories, who gives to it force and special characteristics. story of survive and revenge, using, like the novel, crumbs from the XX century cruel history, it is one of films defined by a form of flavor who resurrect an entire page of the recent past.the sin- maybe the dialogues. and the impression of sketches for the characters. but, it is a decent film. and this could be the only significant thing.

I have been a fan of Hannibal franchise and after watching this which was released on 2007 which I had no clue until now, I loved the young Hannibal. we had watched movies and series about Hannibal but we had no clue why he turned up like that but his movie gives the idea about his tough life as a child and how he faced it to become what he is now. Loved everyone here as the acting was solid. It is totally worth the watch if you haven't watched it yet.

From the get go, a pretty horrible idea for a movie. Depictions of the early life of famous characters rarely do well, and so this was an alarm even before watching the movie. The dialogue is awfully cliché through out the entire movie, as Andy Samberg look-a-like Hannibal is delivering punchline after punchline to his victims. There's also a good amount of pointless scenes, for example where Hannibal learns swordsmanship from a Japanese countess, which just seems like horrible writing to me. Hannibal Lecter was never about physical intimidation or fighting skills - Hannibal, both in the books and previous films, used his masterful intellect, psychopathic manipulation skills and knowledge of human anatomy to his favor.People who liked "Hannibal", might find this movie slightly entertaining. People who didn't like "Hannibal" will hate this movie, since it's the film of the previous three with least story, and by far the most gore just for the sake of it. This is a sub-par extension of that, with worse acting, worse dialogue, worse story, worse everything.

Yes, it does not have the vibe "The Silence of the Lambs" had, yes it is bloody and brutal, but that is the whole point, it doesn't need to be insanely complex or psychologically thrilling, this movie is meant to be completely different, this is what everybody was always curious about. We all loved Lecter and his mysterious presence, but for all these years nobody knew how he began his cruel ways, in this movie everything unfolds and it really adds to the franchise. So what that it is bloody? From what we have heard in previous films all of them would have needed to be as bloody as this one, since Lecter is considered to be an incredibly sick serial killer, who also, appears to be a cannibal and that is exactly what is showed here. In my opinion Gaspard Ulliel did an awesome job as Hannibal Lecter, he had the vibe of the older version of Hannibal Lecter, played by Anthony Hopkins, of course. This is a decent way to revitalize the franchise, so we are not out of hopes for seeing a sequel to 2001's "Hannibal", Lecter films are not quick to come out and are all in a strange order as we know, so this lays the ground for a new film, maybe in 2020? Who knows.Overall it is very entertaining, shows us what people were eager to know about Hannibal Lecter, his roots, reasons, etcetera. Delivers suspense for sure, isn't just a blatant killer movie, has decent acting. The only weakness in my opinion was how they decided to incorporate different countries here, but everybody seems to speak English fluently, even in 1952 Russia :D I know it sounds funny, but nonetheless, it is worth watching, that is the only notable flaw.
