When mild-mannered Martin Harvey finds out that he has inherited a vintage yacht, he decides to take his family on a Caribbean vacation to retrieve the vessel. Upon arriving on a small island and realizing that the ship is in rough shape, Martin and his family end up with more than they bargained for as the roguish Captain Ron signs on to sail the boat to Miami. It doesn't take long before Ron's anything-goes antics get the Harveys into plenty of trouble.

Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.

This is a very funny movie that never really hit the headlines. No idea why, but maybe because I am a sailor myself, I can appreciate the humour. Well worth watching if you want to lose yourself in the Caribbean lifestyle from your cold and damp apartment in winter.A young family is left an old sailing vessel in a will, but have to travel to the Caribbean to sail it to the broker for sale so that they can pay off their mortgage. The adventures on the way with Capt. Ron (Kurt Russell) first make the family hate it, then love it. They have no experience and hire Cap'n Ron to help sail the boat with some disastrous results, all of which could happen in real life, but the movie drags you in to want to go out and buy a boat in the Caribbean yourself and sail away into the sunset, laughing all the way!Highly recommended.

I thought this movie was pretty well done. Kurt Russell is very funny as the main character, Captain Ron. Martin Short plays his typical understated, I am an idiot role, although he does get a lot tougher as the movie goes on. The kids are spoiled rotten like most of today's teens. They do learn some hard lessons about life by the end of the movie and learn to rely on their parents for support and guidance. The daughter thinks she is hot stuff (and she is) but learns the ways of the world to her chagrin. Captain Ron is a well written, well acted movie that is funny and has some nice eye candy. I own it and will watch it several times in the future.

This was a disappointment. It is amazing that it was compared favorably by some reviewers here and on other sites with Master and Commander - there is absolutely no comparison. I had hoped it would at least be to sailing what Caddy Shack is to golfing; didn't happen. Weak plot, pathetic script, "me-centered" teens expecting the world to revolve around them while struggling to become reprobate, improbable (impossible) plot shifts. The 2 stars are for sailing in beautiful waters. It is hard to understand that when so many positive elements were there - budget (obviously), talented actors, nice looking boat, great locale, that Hollywood cannot pull together a script and plot. I almost purchased it, glad I only rented on it Amazon Prime and saved $4.

This movie is so amazing. It basically has it all, Kurt Russell, Martin short, comedy, drama, pirates, boats, guns, fire, boobs, and fire-breathers. It doesn't get much better. The performance Russell gives in showing the resolve, determination, attention to detail and focus shown by the Harvies in their pursuit of a free lifestyle, truly shows a level of unwavering mental toughness that is very impressive and without a doubt lies at the heart of the film's appeal. Ron, is tough, brave and stubborn as he fights through every obstacle, setback and trial throughout the journey. If this movie were to be re-leased today it would look something like this.
