As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.

It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.

If you're looking for a school-book view of WW2, this is the wrong film for you. However, this extremely low-budget ($15k!) debut by 22-year-old Alessandro Pepe (who also composed the soundtrack) succeeds on its own terms, which is simply to present the war as (selectively?) remembered by some SS combat veterans, which it does magnificently. Yes, the result is airbrushed: on a trivial level, everyone is clean, healthy, and wears new clothes, even in 1944; more seriously, the war crimes depicted are routine -- shooting prisoners in the heat of battle, done by both sides, which of course seems to deny the massacres of civilians and genocide that were only committed by the Germans.Clumsy expository sections tacked on at the start and end of the film don't really help, but I think the director is sincere in his wish to be true to the subjective experience of these soldiers, something he manages with exceptional maturity (which, unfortunately, only makes the weakness of the closing voice-over more blatant.)I think Pepe should be given full credit for his remarkable achievement, and allowed a little leeway on not covering all bases. However, for balance, ALSO watch the following:> Son of Saul by László Nemes> Come and See by Elem Klimov> Stalingrad by Joseph VilsmaierAnd for bonus points:> In the Fog by Sergei Loznitsa> Lore by Cate Shortland> The Garden of the Finzi-Continis by Vittorio De Sica

Movie Review

Despite other, accurate reviews on this board, I found the film watchable until the very end when I was to believe that a group of SS soldiers were just there to defend their homeland from being invaded by others. Really? If the average SS was only their to protect their homeland from the hordes, then they should have stayed home from 1933 on-wards. The Great Depression of 1929 was bad for everyone, not just the Germans. The German economy was built from the backs of slave labor and stolen lands and wealth from other neighbors of Europe. They took no pity on the Russian civilian nor his village or city. Nor did they have a micro-gram of mercy on many of their own people. And the SS more or less got away with it because of the cold war that followed. We know that most Germans were peaceful people and were led by the devil at that time. And that the victors do write the history. However, the German soldier, particularly the sadistic SS, took a personal oath to the devil himself. And if one did not recognize that after all the murdering then he should suffer the consequences. At the very end, the gull of the writer to have his female "victim" move to the United States after laying all the war guilt on others made me want to puke. Someone should slap the writer(s).I give the film a 5/10 because it is somewhat watchable despite the valid criticisms of others. I did not expect Saving Private Ryan and really had no expectations before watching this on Netflix.

More of a 8 or 9 but I rated it a 10 to counter balance the uber PC voters. It seems that a lot of reviewers have a hard time with this movie because it doesn't have a clear cut good vs. bad story. Sorry, if that is what you were looking for, watch Star Wars. Good vs. Bad only truly exists in the fictional world. Most soldiers from the various armies were simply doing their best to survive. All sides committed horrendous atrocities and that is what this movie tries to get across to its audience. If you don't agree, do a google search for the "bombing of Dresden", "Rape of Nanking", "Bombing of Nagasaki", etc.... There are no good guysThat said, I started this movie expecting to waste a couple of hours on another stupid war flick. About 20 minutes into the movie, I was sure I was wasting my time. But slowly the movie drew me in making it clear how the soldiers on the front felt. Depression, hopelessness and loneliness. The director is able to turn your emotions if you give him time.In addition, the uniforms, equipment and historical timeline were are accurate which isn't common in most war movies anymore. Both depressing and worth watching.

Netflix should be responsible for spreading fascist propaganda. It is a shame that Netfix dares showing a movie that glorifies SS murderers! Acting is terrible. Storyline - boring. Dialogs - artificial. Scenenery - repetitive. This poorly directed, low budget movie is solely created to show that SS murderers were honest , innocent soldiers.Shame on you! Why FBI did not stop its distribution ?
