A man with an important business meeting finds himself having to take care of the carpool for the neighborhood school children when his wife gets sick. Stopping to get donuts for the kids, things go even more awry when he finds himself a victim of a robbery. However, the situation only gets worse as a desperate man who had been contemplating a bank robbery robs the robbers and takes the man and the kids hostage in their van as his truck is blocked by an armored car. The thing then proceeds into a comedic chase movie. The father finds his kids don't really respect him and they react better to the robber. It's no definitive masterpiece but it's damn close.

The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.

The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.

There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.

Spoiler alert: I didn't just like the movie, I loved it when I was a kid and love it still, it's so funny still, that's the point of comedies and genres before you watch a movie look up the genre of the movie. This movie was in the comedy section, not a combination of genres, just one genre only which is comedy in and of itself. and I like the part about the little girl, Chelsea(i think that was the characters name played by the blonde hair girl), when she said, "Hammerman's suck" now that's hi-lar- ious, cosidering she was probably like what, 11 or 12 when those cuss words are usually reserved or were reserved for the adults only back in the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's but in the 90's i'm pretty sure parents loosened up quite a bit, but in today's age not so much. And another thing, i liked was when mr. miller(andrew and bucky's father) picked her up and ran toward the carpool or van and she said, I'm getting motion sickness stop. that was funny as well and to all of you who hate film get into the comedy genre and you'll see how hard it is to make a film, the trailer itself could be better and most of you reviewer probably was a hostage situation that probably actually had a gunshot, if there was a gunshot in this movie it would have probably been rated pg-13 or rated R. which means kids would not have been able to watch this movie until they were teenagers in the freaking' first place. and what was this movie rated, not rated, or g-rated, or pg 12 or pg.

Carpool (1996): Dir: Arthur Hiller / Cast: Tom Arnold, David Paymer, Kim Coates, Rhea Perlman, Rachael Leigh Cook: Dreadful piece of trash that suggests that not just the children are rowdy in the van but also the situation at hand. David Paymer must drive the kids to school when his wife is too ill but Tom Arnold takes them hostage in their van after a foiled robbery attempt. Apparently he needed money to get his circus up and going. Police catch on and what follows is The Cannonball Run with new rules. Director Arthur Hiller previously made such acclaim films as Love Story and Silver Streak but here he wipes out with cheap production values. Arnold constantly mugs every scene and Paymer is at the mercy of bad writing. Together they are trapped within a film that will likely scar their careers for life. Rhea Pearlman has the thankless role of meter maid who pursues them. Kim Coates overacts as a cop whose basic job is to wipe out or crash into solid objects. Rachael Leigh Cook plays the less than impressed daughter whom will obviously come around in the conclusion. Laugh-less comedy featuring humour that may be deemed inappropriate for its target audience but then again what parent desires to watch a child jams gummie bears up his nose and eat them? Easily one of the worst films of the year and deserves to be toss into an interstate until it is mashed into the nothing that it is. Score: 1 / 10

"Carpool" wasn't all that bad. I think Tom Arnold can be very funny at times and he came through here. The stars of this movie however were the children. They provide most of the laughs. Maybe my one quarrel with the film was Paymer's character's constant whining about being late for his meeting. The movie is nothing special, but its also not terrible. "Carpool" is harmless family fun.

Anyone who's ever been to Sizzler has got to see this movie. Tom Arnold is hilarious as the good son trying to save the carnival and prevent his mother from any further incidents at the smorgasbord. A must see for anyone who has started their day where everything goes from bad to worse. For those of us that ever felt like the "good guy" "bad guy" you've got to see this movie. A hilarious film!!
