It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional

The story-telling is good with flashbacks. The film is both funny and heartbreaking. You smile in a scene and get a soulcrushing revelation in the next.

This is a fresh smart action paced thriller, Stallone, again perfect for this sort of role, despite another unjustly Razzie nomination. Kind of familiarizing us here in familiar as to his job, in 94's The Specialist, a year earlier, exact in it's Adelaide release date, this is the sort of actor we wanna see in this pic, of a wearied assassin, who we see at the start, walk his latest hit into the swamps, where he lets his objective do the honors of blowing himself away. Cut to later, where another assassin, an insanely crazed Banderas, steals Sly thunder, taking out his hits, where this is not making him a happy. Sly happens to fall for his next hit, Electra, throwing more complication into the job, with that nut job Banderas after him. This film puts an inventive new twist on the assassin tale, pitting assassin against assassin, which I really. To this day, Bandera's performance here as a creepy, and completely dangerous and unpredictable psychopath/stays with me. Moore again is great,as the female love interest. But, when is she isn't great. This is one of those smarter action movies, with it's quota, from a director who knows how to make hits, the film you'll see a few of. It's the intelligence of this film I really like. Highly recommended.

Robert Rath is an assassin who is considered to be the best in his profession but he thinks it is time to retire. Miguel Bain is a young upstart hoping to take his crown. The meet for the first time after Bain kills Rath's target just before he can take his shot. Rath then goes after Bain but he ultimately gets away. Rath's next job is to take out a woman, Electra, who is trying to sell a floppy disc containing encrypted data which compromises somebody who wants their secrets to remain secret. Rath and Bain arrive at the hotel at the same time; Bain takes out the buyers while Rath finds the Electra. He doesn't kill her though. After Rath's employer tries to kill him he raises the price for the disc to $20,000,000, to be paid into an overseas bank. Rath and Electra head to the bank even though he knows that Bain will be there; waiting to take the shot as he leaves the bank… just as he was fifteen years previously when he shot the previous number one assassin; a man Rath considered his only real friend. This is an enjoyable thriller with plenty of good solid action as well as some genuine tension. Sylvester Stallone is on good form as Robert Rath; he manages to make him likable despite his profession. Antonio Banderas also impressed as Bain; a character who it is easier to dislike as he isn't too bothered who he kills. Julianne Moore is also good as Electra; it was nice to see that there was no clichéd romantic involvement between her character and Stallone's. The action is varied and exciting without being overly gory. The finale is particularly tense and features a twist that I did not see coming. Overall I'd certainly recommend this to fans of the genre.

For what it is suppose to be, this is a very entertaining and smart film. The Assassins is a film about two Assassins who go up against each other, and only the best Assassin is going to walk away alive from this. The film is written by the very talented Matrix writers Wachowski Brothers, who do and absolute legend at making their stories very entertaining.Stallone and Banderas not only do a good job in this film, but they actually have really great chemistry on set. They are the perfect actors to play against each other, show casing their ability to be deadly assassins. The film unpredictable, and a really cool twist at the end, that you won't see coming!. I loved the mind games between Stallone and Banderas, they were a LOT of fun to watch, and see them try to outsmart each other was a treat!. It's very intelligent, with only a few plot holes, plus the chemistry between Stallone and Julianne Moore was great!. It's One of Stallone's best Non Rocky films, and one of his best performances too!

Robert Rath (Sylvester Stallone) is an assassin for hire. He's looking to get out of the life but his last job gets killed by sociopath competitor Miguel Bain (Antonio Banderas). There's a $2 million contract on surveillance expert Electra (Julianne Moore) who's trying to sell to four Dutch buyers. This is a poorly written script. The beginning doesn't allow the audience to develop any affinity for Sly. Its confused nature gets the movie off on a bad foot. This is a simple assassin versus assassin movie but not one where I care about either one. There are some workable stunt action. Director Richard Donner is unable to bring life to these characters or this movie. The style is too old. Sly is doing quiet talking. Honestly I had trouble understanding some of Banderas' dialog. It's a poor effort from everybody.
