Too much of everything
As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.
While it is a pity that the story wasn't told with more visual finesse, this is trivial compared to our real-world problems. It takes a good movie to put that into perspective.
It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties. It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
This french TV movie takes place in Belleville, the Chinese district in Paris - actually not the main one, but a place where a very important community from Asia lives - and tells us the story of a petty hoodlum, a french one, who is involved with a mysterious Chinese man in search of a young woman. And this fellow asks our lead to help him to purchase the gal. This is a classic tale, with a good description of the underworld in Belleville, good dialogues, sensitive and convincing characters. Some violence and brutality too. Also some romance, of course. No length or boredom in this TV film. Pure french stuff. Not bad.
