It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional

This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.

The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.

I have seen both versions of this movie the original with vivien leigh and this with Rachel weitz and I must admit I found the original much better. the story about the love of an older lady and a younger man during the 1950's not as open or accepted as nowadays. I found the problem with this movie was it felt so stagey and at the same time it lacked the passion of the original. I found Rachel Weitz giving a sleepwalking performance yet I have seen her in many other movies but here she was just not with it. Most of the cast seemed so morose and bored it was for me a hard movie to watch though there was one improvement upon the original and that was the love interest as the actor in this version was lively and believable unlike the actor in the original who actually looked older than the character in the play is to be. I will say I was disappointed because this movie could have been a wonderful experience but instead was so boring.

Plot is plodding and pointless and the characters are unsympathetic. The dialog literally put me to sleep and music reminds me of a funeral dirge. I usually love Rachel Weisz as an actress so I was surprised to find her in such an awful movie. Her cuckold of a husband makes any man in love ashamed and fearful to admit that any man could possibly act in such a spineless manner. The boyfriend is such a cad that it is impossible to see anything from his pointy of view other than agreeing with his actions to escape the clingy partnership he found himself in. the worst character of all was Rachel Weisz's which is a clingy neurotic shell of a woman who has no self worth.

This movie is set in the 1950 and I am thinking of today in 2014. Hester is in a loveless, Mommy Dearest for a mother-in-law marriage. So she meets fun Freddie and have a great time. She spoils the great time by falling in love with Freddie. She truly believes that Freddie can rescue her from dull super rich hubby (who still loves her). After finding out the REAL Freddie, why not leave him? She could ask her hubby for money (which I am sure he would give her) and start a new life. Move out of that depressing street to another brighter area. What does trying to commit suicide proves? Did she think it will make people "Sorry" for her? Even her friends, avoid her. Hester is clearly in a type of depression. She stop having fun. Smokes a lot (which does not solve anything). Many reviewers say that Freddie did the wrong thing by leaving her. He's not married to her, so he did the right thing. If I was Freddie I would have run too. As for Freddie, lots of service men now has face "I am back from the war, what do I do now?" I guess they did not have any after war job training like we do now.Notice at the end, Hester lights the gas heater (this is the opposite at the beginning of the movie) and opens the drapes to look at a brighter morning.

This is a very frustrating film to watch. The premise is good and it is thought-provoking, but only because of Weisz's deep understanding and subtle portrayal of the character that should have been developed but never was...The flashbacks were not well done. They actively obscured an incomplete and hard to follow plot. We never see the relationships develop or deteriorate or are we given any understanding of the protagonist. There are some effective scenes, such as tea at Mother's but not enough to pull it all together. It was as if we were missing an entire chunk of plot to explain why this all happened - actually, what all happened?Yet despite all of this, with what little she was given to work with, Rachel Weisz did make me understand her character, the importance of appearances and the stiff upper lip, the unexpectedness of the mid-life blooming of her teenage passions and the coming to terms with all of this stuff that is not in the sonnets or old masters that she was brought up with...It is not just a case of subtle undercurrents in a restrained British film being missed by an American audience - those moments really are not there. We rely on the characters to tell us about their feelings and the motivations of others rather than witnessing them for the most part. Still worth seeing for those few moments when you can peer into the protagonist's soul and understand why she is being as annoyingly childish as she is...
