It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional

Tells a fascinating and unsettling true story, and does so well, without pretending to have all the answers.

The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

Once again I have been misled by people's ratings and reviews here, and I do wonder if some people liked this film only due to the fact it had won the Grand Prix Nespresso at Cannes. The ending of the movie confirms with the audience that Curtis wasn't going crazy but in fact the apocalyptic storm was coming. The synopsis sort of tells you already that most likely he wasn't suffering from mental illness; therefore, the end was very predictable. I personally don't think I would have watched the film if I knew beforehand that the storyline was so downright simple and straightforward. It had been a slow-paced movie , and I did try to be very patient but still ended up feeling quite disappointed at the end.

First of all, sorry about my English. Oh, also it's my first review. I finished the movie five minutes ago and i felt the urge to come and say something good about it. I really loved this movie. I think Michael Shannon had a flawless performance here, he keeps the low pace of flowing smoothly. Jessica Chastain was at the height too. The music-atmosphere its perfect along with their silents to create the psychological deepness that the director wants to give us. The photography its beautiful too, and the direction also is really good. The dialogues are polished and really good, and the emotional effects are very well done. More than once, i felt scared and with my hearth accelerated. At last i finished the movie with a sensation of tranquility but knowing that something deep inside had been touched. I really liked it and i'm going to follow and search the career of Shannon for more pearls like this one. Alas its not a film for pop corn eaters, of course. Highly recommended.

"he starts building an elaborate and expensive storm shelter in their backyard".sensationalizing the story with this line. the storm shelter was neither elaborate nor that expensive. He bought a shipping container to extend the existing storm shelter, I was expecting something more. The ending was a let down, I could not tell if it was a dream or real. It should have ended with his vindication by having he and his family leaving the shelter only to find devastation around them. a good movie just the same

I just finished watching "Take Shelter".....and I agree it was a sleeper hit of 2011. I rented it from our local library......and actually I almost didn't. I'm very glad I did. The movie deals with a hard working husband/father....who starts being effected by mental problems. For me.....this was a direct connection....cause I suffer with depression and anxiety....so when he was going through certain episodes......I was shaking my head.....yep....been there. Michael Shannon plays Curtis....and hits the nail squarely on the head...thinking he's dreaming of signs of a bad storm coming. He sets out to building a heavy duty storm shelter....which causes stress with his wife (played by Jessica Chastain) and special needs daughter whose deaf (played by Tova Stewart). I would have definitely nominated Michael Shannon for an Academy Award for his portrayal of this hurting stressed out character. I would have bet on him winning also. I won't tell anymore about this film......but it's a must see. Find it.....rent it......and watch it. Stick with it cause it's truly an AWESOME film!!!!!!!
