This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

Listen up, people, hear ye, hear ye, gather all thee round. Praise be to the most beautiful language in the world. And no, no, it is not French. **** French! Why is it that when Americans release a film they include 23 soundtracks, including Norwegian and Icelandic? Hell, they are such bleeding hearts they consider the sensibilities of people living in Outer Mongolia. Hell, come the day we can export to Venus we'd have discs featuring Venusuese. Gee whiz yeah, Americans know how to milk 'em for their pesos by givin' 'em what they want.Ain't nothing wrong with that. Called commerce. But when the movie is in French, or Italian, or Spanish, no such luck. Why bother to dub into English? Simply slap on some subtitles. And forced ones too, you can't get rid of them. This MA MERE felt totally alien to me. There is no real viewer connection if you cannot comprehend the words. And yet I could choose to watch many of my favorite American TV shows in a plethora of unlikely languages at the flick of a button. So, Revolver Entertainment, English box for MA MERE, but no word of warning. I expected what I got, point is, though, many wouldn't have. Here's how to improve your product: include an English soundtrack. The most beautiful language in the world. Like Liz Hurley said in BEDAZZLED, everyone ought to speak it anyway. Oh, and the movie is kinda (expletive deleted if I want this accepted by IMDb) but really it sucks (another expletive deleted).. Yes, lots of nudity and pretty nudity that is too.Movie is nevertheless a load of horse manure. I do think even IMDb will let me get away with that. And if not, let them watch this (expletive deleted) themselves in (expletive deleted) French and they will (expletive deleted) concur.

In an age when sex scenes are deleted from movies by American studios trying for a dumbed-down R rating, it's refreshing to see foreign movies that do their own thing. Ma Mere is one such movie. The young guy's girlfriend is a real looker, especially in bed, where she looks like women actually look when they're having sex ... naked ... as opposed to American movies where the characters somehow manage to make love fully clothed. There's a little bit of twisted French dementia in this movie, as can be expected from the French; they have a bad case of ennui, apparently. But overall this is a good film. And check out that chick taking the 'leading role' with her boyfriend!

If you like French existentialist movies (which in this case is also a perverse "coming of age" movie), this is one of the better ones; if not, don't bother. The first half is slow and cumbersome with the scenes more like vignettes to reveal the Son's naiveté, while the Mother remains inaccessible until the very end. While the second half remains cumbersome through choppy editing, it is more interesting with the introduction of Hansi and Loulou. Most people seem to get hung up over the Libertine attitudes portrayed through deviant sexual activities, but what I took away was the idea that the psyche of willing participants, and particularly the young or immature, can be damaged by any emotionally charged experience, be it sexual or religious. The struggle is to rise above it. The one scene of particular interest revealed the blurred distinctions between dominant and submissive personalities (Hansi & Loulou), with the Sadist revealed as a Masochist by the emotional damage they were inflicting on themselves through the physical damage inflicted on someone they cared about. The Sadist/Masochist roles are easily reversed as seen through Loulou's comment when he throws himself in the pool in the deleted scene.

This is the worst film I've seen since Gigli. Little or no indication is given of why the male protagonist involves himself in all the sexual depravity his mother introduces him to, which makes all the explicit and unpleasant sex scenes gratuitous and pornographic. The script is uninteresting and unfunny, and the camera-work is nothing to write home about. The film's only redeeming feature is the gorgeous love interest, called Hansie I think, played by Antoine off Eurotrash's daughter. I didn't like Isabelle Huppert's other bad-sex movie, La Pianiste (The Piano Teacher), but Ma Mere easily trumps it for complete badness by making all the sex, befoulment, incest and masturbation over coffins entirely gratuitous. If this is the best these people can produce, then they shouldn't have been making films, and George Bataille should have stuck to being a librarian. This is a dire film, right up there with Ishtar, but too unpleasant for the 'so bad it's good' market. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
