One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.

Despite its setting in the modern Australian outback, Red Hill is essentially a Western. Ryan Kwanten plans Shane Cooper a young police constable (~ deputy) newly arrived to a small town from the big city with his pregnant wife. He comes up against the local inspector Old Bill (Steven Bisley), a Judge Roy Bean'ish law west of the Pecos, who barely conceals his disdain for someone he suspects is a coward. Cooper's first day on the job, the day over which the film is set, starts off badly and promptly gets worse. An escape from a maximum security prison sees the arrival of convicted murdered Jimmy Conway in town. This news of this escape strikes a chord with a number of the townspeople and sees Old Bill muster a search party, or posse by any other name, in the expectation of the arrival of Conway (chillingly played by Tommy Lewis in an almost wordless dead-eyed performance). Ryan Kwanten, in his first major lead role, is an amiably low-key hero. Although it becomes clear that Old Bill has underestimated his apparently callow young constable his capabilities are not unrealistically augmented and he doesn't suddenly become a combination of McGyver and Rambo when the chips are down. The real power in his performance is more effectively illustrated by the fact that the powerful performances of both Lewis and Bisley do not completely obliterate interest in his presence. Red Hill is among other things a genuinely beautiful film to behold with the shots of Victorian landscape breathtaking to behold and features an excellent score subtly helping to augment the Western atmosphere. As the first film from Patrick Hughes (who produced, directed, wrote, edited and presumably fed and watered the animals) it bodes well for the career to come.

Red Hill is a usual western tale, a man is arrested, he breaks free and comes back for revenge and things aren't what they seem. Every good guy is a terrible shot and all of them except the main guy are incredibly dumb. The bad guy is mute, startling and an expert marksman until select moments when for no reason he seems to forget how to operate a firearm. The acting is mediocre except for the main actor, Ryan Kwanten, who does an excellent job portraying a man who can get the crap kicked out of him for an hour and half. The soundtrack is pretty good, the visuals are okay and the blood factor is little over the top on occasion making this seem almost like a cheesy slasher flick but with guns instead of knives. The plot line is simple and doesn't leave you to think about anything afterwards making this overall, a fairly forgettable movie. It's not a terrible flick but it is predictable and best suited for an afternoon matinée viewing while you're cleaning the house and need something in the background.

***This Review Contains Spoilers***A lot of reviewers have given this film low marks because they say it doesn't compare to a US Western or that the plot has been done before. My advice? Watch it purely on its own merit and forget the comparisons. I would have given the film a 10 out 10, but for a few minor issues that I had with it such as a few noticeable goofs including poor digital with the CGI panther and the cut when Shane enters the town hall that shows him already seated in the chair at the back BEFORE he sits down in it. I also felt there could have been a bit more scenes with Shane getting to know and liking the townspeople so that learning what happened long ago would be more horrifying to him and the audience as well.Otherwise, I like that the plot doesn't throw you all the answers in the first five minutes. You're also given just enough information about the characters to make them three dimensional. In addition, you're forced to face horror without reason for much of the first part of the film. The truth is unveiled slowly and meticulously with enough clues to help the audience along without giving away too much.As for the backdrop of the movie and the music: absolutely beautiful. Progression from bright morning slowly to gray overcast skies before the storm and then to night was a perfect plot transition element. The music kept pace with the changes and the guitar, horn, drums and violin (?) selections were perfect counterpoints to the action. The movie definitely had "grit" and a Western feel to it. If you like Westerns, or even cop dramas/crime stories, Red Hill is well worth your time.

Red Hill follows a police officer who recently transferred from the city to the rural town of Red Hill for the health of his pregnant wife. On his first day, however, an escaped convict threatens the apparent peace in the town.I loved this movie. The camera work was excellent, the town's characters had-character, and the tense sections were pulled off just right. The main direction the movie would take was discernible early on, but I never knew what would happen next. It played like a western and had a wonderful small town feel.I would recommend this movie to anyone. It was gripping, fun, and had touching moments. Excellent!
