It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.

The war in the Pacific was a hell of a lot different than the war in Europe. Of course both where terrible - full of death, sacrifice, and heroism. However, it seems the soldier's stories from the European theater have gotten a lot more press.The US Marines in the Pacific lived like animals in the most horrible environments imaginable. On top of fighting an enemy committed to kill them at all cost and never surrender, they battled the mud, heat, malaria, near starvation, and isolation for months on end.Basically, it was a total nightmare, and the heroism of all the US Marines in the Pacific theater is nothing short of awe inspiring. The Pacific tells this story well. It is a must see on the topic of WW2.

Mini Series like The Pacific are one of a kind just like its European counterpart Band of Brothers is. They both serve a purpose. While more and more of the surviving veterans who fought both wars are leaving us to join their fallen brothers, those two are keeping their memories for the next generations to come. They are reminding us of their sacrifices, their bravery and most importantly to remind us that they went into harms way so the world can finally leave in peace again.As a great grand daughter of one of those heroes, I thank you, Steven and Tom, for serving that noble cause. We should never forget those heroes who witnessed death at each step they took, losing many of their friends and sometimes siblings while getting wounded themselves.My great grandfather never talked much about what he saw but we could feel that it's something that haunted him for the rest of his life. He didn't consider himself as a hero but just as a young man willing to do his duty. I'm so proud of him and all his brothers who fought alongside him. I miss him so much. ♥So there is no need to compare both The Pacific and Band of Brothers because they are both an amazing tribute to the ones we call the Greatest Generation. Through them, we saw the ugliness of war and how mankind can be able to display unbelievable cruelty to each other. When you see Snafu digging gold through the denture of a dead Japanese or the horrible manslaughter of a Banzai charge, it takes you to the guts and you realize how traumatizing that war was and we should fight to never allow such a bloodshed again.So thank you Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg for reminding us that terrible truth in an age where war still rages on a lesser scale but still claims lives everyday. It seems we still have much to learn.

Pacific is done with a similar flair that Band of Brothers possessed, but doesn't have quite the same feel to it...and there is no reason it should really...The War in Europe, and The War in the Pacific, were totally different...and the overall tempo of the Pacific War is shown pretty much the way it was, in an island hopping campaign that never seemed to end...Where BoB tells a story of deep emotional ties, developed within an Army company of Paratroopers, Pacific tells a completely different story, one of young men who made the giant leap from civilian to Marine, in a very short time. There is a certain loyalty displayed, and patriotism, but each character is portrayed as an individual...the movie dwells a lot on the inner turmoil that every soldier had to deal with...One reviewer really slammed the series, for not being realistic...I would agree partially, but this wasn't supposed to just focus on how fanatical the Japanese were. Instead, it tries to paint a broader picture of how our young men reacted to the constant fighting...Frankly, I did like Pacific, more because I did not expect it to be another movie...

It's not a historical anything, it's just a "personal drama" over 10 episodes, with little to do with real life fighting, or how real life soldiers act, it does show some brutal stuff but it's put there only to let the viewers know it was indeed a brutal war in real life, but these are raw elements in an otherwise bland 10 episodes. The characters are not interesting and fake, the plot isn't interesting either, in fact it's typical American war movie: 1) don't show the real reason we are at war, fed the public some bs; 2) of course Americans get to have girlfriends of every nationality they want, because they're Americans; 3) personal drama and so called transformations on characters that clearly never existed in real life(and even by some miracle if they did, it's clearly not based on their actions); 4) portraying the enemy as SUPER STUPID(all the Japanese soldiers in this movie only know how to banzai charge and die like idiots), and SUPER EVIL, as if the poor Americans are hated for no reason at all; 5) portraying the Americans as fighting "a just cause", good vs. evil, and blaming the enemy for all the evil in the world, and brainwashing the average public that has no idea about history with this bs propaganda. As I said, the characters, scenes, plot, action etc. are all weak, I feel like I wasted my time watching what some guy believes happened in WW2 and not what actually happened or at least firmly based on what actually happened instead of some irrelevant and fake drama of non-existing people. Thanks for wasting my time, HBO.
