Bon Cop, Bad Cop (2006): Dir: Eric Canuel / Cast: Colm Feore, Patrick Huard, Sylvain Marcel, Pierre Lebeau, Lucie Laurier: Hilarious cop comedy about background. The result is one of the greatest comedies to come out of Canada. Colm Feore plays Martin Ward, a cop from Toronto and Patrick Huard plays David Bouchard from Quebec. Both are investigating the same crime due to the crime scene jurisdiction. Murder victims feature a tattoo and are involved with hockey. This leads to numerous plot turns interlocked with hilarious dialogue. Director Eric Canuel does a great job shifting humour along with both languages used in the film. Feore plays the straight man by the book but at home he is seen as ordinary even after his attempts to appear hip to his son. Huard is reckless in his actions often causing near death situations yet he has a wife and child. There are a strong host of supporting characters including Ward's sister whom Bouchard is found in bed with after Ward is attacked in his own home. The plot grows even more tense when Bouchard's daughter is kidnapped. Well made crime comedy with tremendous action combined with on target and twisted sense of humour particularly a scene where the two cops accidentally get high. Strong theme regarding language and background result in one of the best and funniest crime comedies of the decade. Score: 10 / 10

When a body is found on the billboard of the border of Quebec and Ontario a cop from each province are teamed together to investigate.Amusing buddy film refuses to follow the rules of the buddy film genre and is all the better for it. Sure one cop is gruff and one neat but even though they argue they do become rapid friends because there is some sort of respect from the start. They nicely drawn characters, like everyone in this movie. These are people you really do like. The mystery isn't all that mysterious since a good number of the pieces fall into place early, but at the same time this allows for the movie to go off in its own way, with a couple of twists I didn't see coming. The action scenes are well done, and like the rest of the film don't follow the typical patterns-people get hurt and bleed. Best of all its really funny, not joke funny but humor coming out of the characters. I really like the film. There is one problem with the film, at least for a large portion of American audiences and thats half the film is in French. Its subtitled but the characters bounce back and forth between English and French freely (and even conjugate curse words). If you don't mind the on again off again titling I highly recommend this film.

I was born and raised in Montreal and for one thing, it is a city that is far more diverse with people who are far more funny and intelligent than these caricatures. The humour here is contrived and most of the comic scenes are designed for 12 year olds. The whole thing seems to be a glossy TV production for tourists or for language students who should be introduced to the french-Canadian lingo and the rivalry between Quebec and Ontario. Thus the jokes are unintelligible to someone outside Canada and too cliché for those who are Canadian. The hostility shown by people towards the 'other' province in this movie isn't funny and it really does not reflect anything close to reality since Canada is known for its tolerant society. Most people in Montreal do understand English and more than 1/3 of them are anglophones! (Yes, French Canadians are not the only inhabitants of Montreal) while the name Bouchard is very standard and recognizable throughout the country. Nothing noteworthy as far as direction and photography either. I would classify this movie as very light entertainment.

The ending to this movie, from which the title line comes, is one that I have never seen in any other cop show and was absolutely brilliant. In fact, just about everything about this movie was brilliant. The technical aspects - direction by Erik Canuel, cinematography by Bruce Chun, editing, music, and, of course, the lead actors, Colm Feore (Chicago, The Red Violin) and Patrick Huard. Two cops, one from Toronto, and one from Montreal join forces to track a serial killer. You can only imagine how many laughs that will be coming from this pairing. They actually made the best buddy team since Nick Nolte and Eddie Murray in 48 Hours.Add some heat from Sarain Boylan (Saw IV) and Lucie Laurier, and you have a winning combination for an enjoyable movie.
