Lt. Dave Robicheaux, a detective in New Iberia, Louisiana, is trying to link the murder of a local hooker to New Orleans mobster Julie (Baby Feet) Balboni, who is co-producer of a Civil War film. At the same time, after Elrod Sykes, the star of the film, reports finding another corpse in the Atchafalaya Swamp near the movie set, Robicheaux starts another investigation, believing the corpse to be the remains of a black man who he saw being murdered 35 years before.

A film with more than the usual spoiler issues. Talking about it in any detail feels akin to handing you a gift-wrapped present and saying, "I hope you like it -- It's a thriller about a diabolical secret experiment."

The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.

I stumbled blindly onto this on Netflix, saw it had Tommy Lee Jones in it and figured I enjoy just about anything he touches. Low and behold, I was delightful impressed by this. This tragic story about a detective investigating a murder is just pure intensity. But it's not action film intensity, it's the intensity of the pursuit of justice. So much unfortunate murders, innocents forced and the power brokers not caring about anyone else but themselves and their own fortune. There are only a few shows I've watched where I felt like I could feel what it's like to be in the part of the country where it was filmed, and this is without a doubt one of them. The deep, dark, sultry bowels of Louisiana. Stunning landscapes, intense humidity, mosquito's almost as big as the ones in Northern Minnesota, just breathtaking location filming. Moody without being over-dramatic, enriching and intricate plot and story. This may have been an accidental find, but I'm sure glad I stumbled onto it. Wonderful movie, highly recommended.

My TV Guide, sometimes erratic, gives this one and a half stars out of four but I don't know why.Granted, it couldn't have been very expensive. Most of the stars are people to whom important roles are no longer coming. And it DOES meander, like the bayous and the oxbow lakes of the Louisiana bayou country. Colorful characters, both real and hallucinated, are embedded in it, and Sheriff Tommy Lee Jones' search for a killer, or killers, leads him to one after another. And there is a noir-like narration that keeps us up with events. From time to time, at least in the last few lines, it's evocative and agreeably literate. But, by God, it really does reek of atmosphere. Not the cotton candy fluff of "The Big Easy" or "Angel Heart." We don't hear any French spoken and nothing much is made of cajun music or blackened redfish. A glimpse of All Saints' Cemetery but nothing of Bourbon Street. I didn't see anyone eat a shrimp. The story is too complicated to get into. Briefly, besides a forty-year-old killing, and a few more recent ones, there is a look at producing a movie, fighting mosquitoes, the career of a drunk, and a hero who doesn't hesitate to do a Dirty Harry number on a suspect.I don't see how the performances could be improved. Tommy Lee Jones, now a bit past his romantic young man period, has always been an innovative actor. You never really know how he's going to tackle the next line. You can't anticipate its terminal contours.Mary Steenbergen looks just dandy as Jones' wife. Ned Beatty is all bluster and pathos. John Goodman is a two-dimensional villain. There are weaknesses too. If I had to have a hallucinated figure mentoring me, it wouldn't be old John Bell Hood, who had a furious temper and was extremely aggressive. It's worth catching.

how for the life of me that this movie only rated a 6.1 on IMDb is beyond me. OK, 6.1 would mean its a pretty decent movie but this movie is better then that. the 102 minutes of this movie passed by in a breeze it seems. the movie was so good i didn't want it to end. the portrayal of the bayou and its people were dead on. tommy lee doesn't do bad acting, he puts his all into every role, occasionally he just winds up in a bad movie but it wouldn't be his fault.for you people out there who like a good murder mystery movie, here's one of the better ones. this movie was paced perfectly, not to slow or fast, the dialogue was great and u felt like u were in the bayou. there wasn't one bad actor in this movie, everybody did a bang up job. i just wish movies like just would just get its fair shot instead of going straight to DVD. there's so many crappy movies out there that have a higher rating then this one..., what a joke. people out there if u see this review, plz...plz give this movie a chance, u wouldn't regret it.

Dave Robicheaux is a no-nonsense detective(... why, yes, that is Tommy Lee Jones' role, however did you guess? He does fine with what he's given to work with, and is enjoyable to watch), simultaneously investigating a serial killer who targets prostitutes and a 1965 lynching, and gets advice from a long-dead Confederate general who only he can see(and he doubts that the officer is indeed real). I have not read the novel this is an adaptation of, but I feel confident in asserting that it was butchered in writing this screenplay(as often happens with this sort of thing, in various ways). This is just exactly a cohesive whole, and at times, it stops short of even that. The plot feels unresolved by the end of it, and the conclusion to the mystery doesn't satisfy(assigning someone the blame for a crime in a story like this isn't enough). Characters are introduced, do little, and are treated to next to no development. The only 93 minutes of running time tend to snail away. This does give a decent look into the environment of post-Katrina New Orleans, and the race relations. There's a bunch of weird stuff that I guess is either because of what was cut from the source material, or is a cultural thing, such as all the talking about producing films in the state. This can be somewhat exciting when it tries to be, which isn't often. There is a moderate amount of strong language and bloody, violent and disturbing content, as well as brief female topless nudity. I recommend this only to big fans of the deadpan Texan. 6/10
