The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.

There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

Red Planet is best described as a disaster. The movie could have been a moderate success, but the end result was just a pointless and boring journey from start to finish. When you have a cast featuring the likes of Val Kilmer, Carrie-Anne Moss, Tom Sizemore, Simon Baker, Benjamin Bratt and Terence Stamp, there would be a chance that this could be watchable. Nope. Not even close. Even the cast could not redeem this poorly unoriginal science fiction movie. Red Planet centers on a group of astronauts tasked to conduct research on the colonization of Mars in order to save the human race on Earth which is slowly dying. The diverse but equally talented and intelligent group of astronauts include Robby Gallagher (Val Kilmer, Batman Forever), Kate Bowman (Carrie-Anne Moss, The Matrix) Ted Santen (Benjamin Bratt, Law and Order), Chip Pettengill (Simon Baker, The Mentallist) and Bud Chantillas (Terence Stamp, Superman II), as well a military robot named "AMEE" (Autonomous Mapping Exploration and Evasion) which has been brought along to guide them through Mars which was a clichéd version of HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). As you guessed it, the mission goes awry when they crash land and they find themselves stranded and fighting for survival. How predictable and unoriginal.Val Kilmer has seen better days and Red Planet was something that he would rather forget. Carrie-Anne Moss was riding high after the success of the mega-blockbuster The Matrix (1999) and this would not have helped her career. Tom Sizemore is more suited to tough guy roles and he looked out of place here. Benjamin Bratt and Simon Baker were just typecast and their characters didn't have anything going for them. Terence Stamp has always been reliable in a majority of his movies, and I strongly felt that he was not at fault here.Red Planet was just boring and uninteresting from start to finish. It could have become interesting or even improve, but the movie just blew every chance. You could be forgiven for thinking that this was another rip off of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) with the similar plot and the artificial robot. Regardless, the end result is poor, and it had nothing going for it. It doesn't even hold a candle to Stanley Kubrick's classic. The ending, while merciful, was also pathetic and it was just tacked on as a band aid solution to finish off the movie.Red Planet was a box office flop that received many dismal reviews from critics and audiences alike. It also cemented a spot as one of the worst movies of 2000. Everything about it was dismal. And not even the cast could redeem the movie. While it didn't put me to sleep, I just couldn't wait for the movie to finish. Save your time and don't waste your money. Red Planet was certainly a forgettable experience.

I honestly haven't got a lot of good things to say about Red Planet other than it tried. It really tried. This wasn't meant to be a movie that makes you fall asleep instead of afraid and thrilled and to that end I feel like I must go easier on it. The people behind the effects deserve praise and really push this movie up in quality. it's just a shame that it is undercut by lazy directing and bland as unbuttered white bread acting with Val Kilmer putting in a lazy performance to rival his batman performance a few years earlier. At the end of the day I can't recommend this movie. The only time I would say go ahead is if your internet is down at 3 in the morning and this is on TV, and even then I would check what was one Adult Swim first.

The movie has a predictable plot and ticks off all the clichés in the book. However, I want to commit on the "scientific accuracy" for a bit.A reviewer of The Martian recommended this movie to me, because of its scientific accuracy. The following is a small list of the accurate points: Rotating parts on the spaceship for artificial gravity // The landing probe // The space suits // The delay for communicating with EarthThe following are the cringe-worthy elements I still remember: Solar storm they had no shielding for whatsoever ? A solar storm like that would have fried _all_ of earth's satellites (Earth is closer, energy dissipation is cubic) // No satellites in orbit around Mars, so they could see what was going on? // All of our electronics are fried, let's launch NOW! (our orbit takes about 8h, so launching 2h in advance would land them about 90* or 5000 km off course) // The "reverse the rock formations from the HAB" trick // The walkie talkie they made from the mini-Rover (real rover is bigger, and where the hell did they get the soldering iron??) // AMEE gone rogue because of an EMP storm (??) // The launch from the Russian probe would have killed the guy (G-forces) // Their orbits at the end match perfectly, both in location (0.3km apart) and speed (perfect match)And finally, the interface on the Russian probe takes the cake.Long story short: bad science, horrible plot, but a decent delivery from the actors and nice special effects.

I'm an avid science-fiction fan and I enjoy movies about space travel, especially if it's about traveling to the Mars. This movie is so unwatchable that I barely cared about what was happening to the characters. The movie is not engaging at all and the characters are all unlikable, even the actress that played Trinity in the Matrix looks completely bland in this horrible movie. The sets are all poorly made and even by the standards of 15 years ago, the special effects are disastrous;considering there were fantastic movies like the Matrix and the Terminator 2 around at the time.I'm sure my judgment has not been influenced by all the successful science fiction movies I've seen during all these years. I even enjoyed Mission to Mars. At least that movie was emotionally engaging, but this one is just horrible. By the end of the movie, my nephew and I were laughing out loud at how horrible the movie was and we both thought its only redeeming quality was the girl's space suit near the end of the movie, which was much more attractive than the ugly suits the characters had on all the time. This movie is not even eye-candy. It is just terrible. Do not even get me started on how unrealistic and unscientific it was. Avoid this movie like the plague.
