Six years ago NASA discovered the possibility of alien life within our solar system. A probe was launched to collect samples, but crashed upon re-entry over Central America. Soon after, new life forms began to appear and half of Mexico was quarantined as an infected zone. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain "the creatures," while a journalist agrees to escort a shaken tourist through the infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the U.S. border.

It's funny watching the elements come together in this complicated scam. On one hand, the set-up isn't quite as complex as it seems, but there's an easy sense of fun in every exchange.

There is a real hater's review that caused me to write my own review. The prior guy, i_am_bryony, moaned and whined about how terrible EVERYTHING was. The sets, the acting, the writing, everything! To give equal time to some sensible thought, I really enjoyed this movie, especially considering how few dollars were spent on production! I have read that it was made for $15,000 ! That alone is worthy of an award. I applaud the under-use of monster reveals. You barely see them at all, but you know what they look like from crude drawings, presented in the context of the movie. Almost at t he very end, we actually meet one of them, and then see another alien interacting with the first alien. Their action was carefully very gentle. The entire final sequence--night time at the deserted gas station--was completely haunting. I mean it. The remoteness, the feeling of being alone, and the total lack of protection--these things elicited a real feeling in me. I think the write/director deserves HUGE kudos. I really like this little jewel of a film.

This it romance movie. Most of the most they make you pay attention to a romance going on with a man and a women. Well the arm is fighting giant monsters. The monsters should been the mean them instead of a having bunch of scenes all about this boring couple falling in love. The story line is awful. I would not give it a 6.4. It is a 4. 6.4 is just overrating. The sequel monster dark continent is better. But really not a very good movie. But better then this. Do not waste your time. And do not waste your money. Do not see this awful movie. See The war of the worlds. See Godzilla See Pasifice Rim. Do not see this movies. Atlantic Rim is a lot better then this.

Alien monsters exist and they are on earth, while governments and their armies are at war the ordinary person on the street is living in war zones. A journalist agrees to escort one of his boss's daughters across the Mexico/America border through the war zone. This movie was apparently made on a shoe string budget but doesn't often look cheap. As far as visual style and acting go they are pretty average enough to not offend, even if you never really see a monster properly. The main problem that I found was that this film was boring in places and went on far too long. This felt more of a voyage of discovering two characters rather than anything to do with Monsters, the suspense and scares were far too apart to cause any lasting emotion. As the film dragged on I kept wanting one of the character to get eaten to make things more lively, alas this didn't happen. Don't expect a thrill-a-minute ride, not much happens; they talk, they hide, they talk, they run, they talk, they cross the border, they talk. Maybe this film tries to be too clever by implying metaphors and coincidences and thus becomes pretentious, either way I stopped caring because it was soo limp and boring. I'm glad I won't have to watch this one again.

Yes I give it a 9. I think Monsters is a wonderful, melancholy film. I do agree the title is misleading and can generate some hate as people will feel duped and expect an action film of sorts. I would describe this as a 'feel piece' - my girlfriend finished watching it, then looked at me in puzzlement commenting nothing happened in it. She's right too. Its not a story that goes from A to B as such, its not just about Monsters wrecking stuff or two strangers thrown together into a dangerous situation and falling in love. It creates a world and you are part of that world for an hour and a half. It creates a mood, an atmosphere. A strong element of this is down to the music, which is excellent throughout. The actors do a fine job of creating their characters and their chemistry feels genuine. I understand they are a real life couple but that doesn't always come across. I would have said that some of the success of the film was down to luck as it was shot on the fly. However there is no mistaking the genius of the ending. The two main characters are in an abandoned Gas Station, there is a storm coming and you catch a glimpse of a monster approaching. This will be as a viewer the first time a monster is seen clearly and the music as ominous, something bad is going to happen. Slowly the mood changes, the music evolves into that of wonder as another monster approaches and it looks like they mate or something (thankfully nothing weird) and the two main characters watch in awe at these beautiful creatures as they do their 'thang' and then move along in peace. There is then a silence as the two characters take in what they just saw. Its brilliant and turns the film on its head completely. I understand why people may hate this, but for some like myself, its a really great experience.
